About Debre Damo Monastery
Debre Damo is a flat-topped amba (mesa) at 2,216 m, accessed only by a braided ox-hide rope hoisted by the monks. The monastery dates from the 6th century (founded by Abuna Aregawi, one of the Nine Saints) and is Ethiopia's oldest surviving monastic site. Women are not permitted — this prohibition extends to female animals. Strictly for intrepid male travellers.
