About Gondar

Gondar was Ethiopia's capital from 1636 to 1855 under Emperor Fasilides. The Fasil Ghebbi walled royal enclosure (UNESCO, 1979) holds six intact castles and palaces in Portuguese, Moorish and Indian hybrid styles, plus the Debre Berhan Selassie church famous for its winged-angel ceiling frescoes. The setting for the annual Timkat Epiphany festival.
