Overview

Few places on earth stop you in your tracks quite like the Simien Mountains. Stand on the escarpment edge at Geech and the ground simply vanishes — a sheer drop of a thousand metres into a patchwork of terraced fields and river valleys far below. This UNESCO World Heritage landscape was carved by ancient volcanic upheaval into a cathedral of flat-topped ambas, knife-edged ridges and rust-red pinnacles, and it remains one of Africa's most dramatic and least-crowded trekking destinations.

The wildlife here is genuinely endemic and nowhere else on earth will you see it. Gelada baboons — sometimes called bleeding-heart monkeys for the vivid crimson patch on their chests — roam the escarpment grasslands in troops that can number in the hundreds, grazing on stems and roots with a dexterous hand-and-foot technique more primate than any other monkey. Walia ibex pick their way along ledges that would make a mountain goat nervous, and with luck and patience you may spot the Ethiopian wolf, Africa's rarest canid, loping across the high moorland in search of rodents. Scout rangers accompany every group, providing both safety and a direct connection to the local communities that have shaped this landscape for generations.

This six-day expedition is mule-supported, freeing you to walk with a light daypack while laden mules carry tents, food and camp kit along the classic Sankaber–Geech–Chenek arc. Nights are spent at staffed mountain camps at altitude between 3,200 m and 3,700 m — cold, brilliantly star-filled and profoundly quiet. The trek is graded challenging: daily stages of five to eight hours on rocky trail at elevation demand a reasonable base fitness and prior experience of multi-day hiking, though no technical climbing is required.

The expedition opens and closes in Gondar, one of Ethiopia's most storied cities. The medieval castles of Fasil Ghebbi and the frescoed ceiling of Debre Birhan Selassie church offer a rich cultural counterpoint to the raw mountain days, and the drive north through juniper forest and highland villages is itself a journey through living Ethiopian pastoral life. Fly to Gondar — Arrival and Castle City Orientation

Fly into Gondar (Atse Tewodros Airport) from Addis Ababa — a short 55-minute hop that delivers you straight to the highlands at 2,100 m, bypassing any long overland approach. Your AECONS guide meets you at the airport and transfers you to your Gondar hotel, where you have the afternoon free to adjust to altitude and explore at your own pace. The walled compound of Fasil Ghebbi — a 17th-century royal enclosure of stone castles earned Gondar the nickname 'Camelot of Africa' — is a short walk away and worth a stroll before sunset. Dinner and a briefing on the trek ahead round out the evening.

Gondar to Sankaber Camp — Into the National Park

After an early breakfast the 4x4 climbs north from Gondar on a paved road that quickly gives way to a corrugated track winding through juniper and hagenia forest, arriving at the park headquarters in Buyit Ras (around 3,260 m) where permits are processed and the scout and mule team join the group. The opening walk to Sankaber Camp (approximately 3,200 m) is a four-hour introduction to Simien terrain — rolling moorland interrupted by sudden escarpment viewpoints over the Tekeze River valley. Gelada troops are almost guaranteed here, often grazingwithin metres of the trail, and the afternoon light turns the amber grassland gold.

Sankaber to Geech Camp — Escarpment Ridgeline Trek

Today's stage is the most dramatic of the expedition: a five-to-seven-hour traverse along the escarpment rim from Sankaber to Geech Camp (3,600 m), passing through stands of giant lobelia and Afroalpine heath with vertiginous drop-aways to the right. The viewpoint near Imet Gogo (3,926 m) is the centrepiece — a narrow finger of rock jutting over a thousand-metre void where lammergeier bearded vultures ride thermals at eye level. Your guide leads a gelada-tracking session in the late afternoon before the cook prepares a hot camp dinner beneath a sky full of southern stars.

Geech to Chenek Camp — Walia Ibex Territory

The route from Geech to Chenek (3,620 m) covers roughly 16 km in six to seven hours, climbing through moorland patched with everlasting flowers before descending into a valley and ascending again to the Chenek plateau — prime Walia ibex habitat. These sure-footed bovids, found nowhere else on earth, navigate cliff faces with casual ease; your scout will position the group for close but undisturbing observation. Ethiopian wolves are occasionally encountered in this zone at dusk, hunting giant mole-rats in the high meadows. Dinner is served with views across a landscape that turns deep violet as the sun drops.

Chenek Day Hike to Ras Dashen Approach — Summit Views

From Chenek a half-day acclimatisation hike pushes toward the upper flanks of Ras Dashen — at 4,550 m the highest peak in Ethiopia and the fourth highest in Africa — offering panoramic views across the massif without committing to the full summit ascent (which requires an additional permit and extra days). The afternoon is spent at leisure in camp, giving legs a rest and allowing the altitude to be absorbed at a gentler pace. Your guide introduces the local ecology of the Afroalpine zone: giant groundsels, red-hot poker plants and the insect-rich meadows that sustain the wolf's primary prey.

Trek Out — Return to Gondar and Onward

An early morning final walk retraces a scenic section of the ridgeline before meeting the 4x4 for the drive back to Gondar, arriving in time for lunch and a final visit to the breathtaking frescoed interior of Debre Birhan Selassie church — its ceiling depicting 80 cherub faces and its walls telling the story of Ethiopian Christianity in vivid tempera. The afternoon is free for souvenir shopping in Gondar's market before your guide transfers you to the airport for the return flight to Addis Ababa and your onward connection.
