Overview
Rising from the Central Highlands of Kenya, the Aberdare Range is a world apart — a cathedral of montane forest, moorland and rushing mountain streams where Africa's big mammals roam at altitudes above 3,000 metres. This three-day circuit pairs the legendary tree-hotel experience of the Aberdares with a scenic foray into the foothills of Mount Kenya, Africa's second-highest peak, giving you two of Kenya's most rewarding highland ecosystems in a single short getaway from Nairobi. The Aberdare National Park shelters one of Kenya's densest populations of elephant, buffalo, black rhino, leopard, and the elusive bongo antelope — a shy forest giant rarely seen in the wild anywhere else on the continent. At night, floodlit waterholes at the famous tree hotels draw a procession of animals to drink just metres below your window, making the evening game viewing as spectacular as any open-savanna drive. Days bring guided forest walks, trout-stream valleys threaded with giant heather and Hagenia trees, and moorland panoramas that feel nothing like the Africa of tourist brochures. From the Aberdares the route rolls north-east through the farm towns of Nyeri and Naro Moru, skirting the lower slopes of Mount Kenya where cedar forests give way to shamba smallholdings and tea estates. Nanyuki, gateway to the Mount Kenya massif, sits almost exactly on the equator and offers a vivid contrast: open acacia savanna, cattle-country skies and, on clear mornings, an ice-capped summit floating impossibly above the equatorial plains. The 5,199-metre peak of Batian is the dramatic backdrop to leisurely walks, visits to community conservancies and the easy pleasures of one of Kenya's most charming highland towns. This tour is graded easy — no technical trekking or long bush walks are required — making it ideal for families, first-time safari-goers and anyone seeking a refreshing alternative to the Maasai Mara crowds. Game drives use a purpose-equipped 4x4 safari vehicle with roof hatch, and all accommodation is full-board so you can concentrate on the landscapes and wildlife without logistical worries. The circular drive back to Nairobi on Day 3 takes you through the foothills coffee belt and the dramatic Nyeri escarpment viewpoints, rounding off a compact but deeply satisfying highland adventure.
