Nairobi City Tour — Giraffe Centre & Karen Blixen

A cultural half-day — hand-feed giraffes and tour the 'Out of Africa' farmhouse.

Overview

Nairobi may be East Africa's beating commercial heart, but tucked within its leafy Karen suburb lies a world apart — where endangered Rothschild's giraffes stretch their spotted necks over a wooden platform and colonial history lingers in the cool shade of fever trees. This half-day cultural loop threads together two of the city's most beloved landmarks in a single, unhurried morning, giving you an authentic taste of Nairobi beyond the downtown skyline.

Your first stop is the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife's Giraffe Centre, home to a resident herd of Rothschild's giraffes — one of the rarest giraffe subspecies on the planet. Climb the raised feeding platform and you are eye-to-eye with these gentle giants; pellets balanced on an outstretched palm (or, for the brave, placed between your lips) will be plucked away by a long, steel-blue tongue. The centre's education wing explains the conservation breeding programme that has helped lift wild Rothschild's numbers back from the brink, and a short boardwalk winds through forest inhabited by warthogs and bushbuck.

From the Giraffe Centre it is a short drive deeper into Karen — Nairobi's most atmospheric neighbourhood, named after the Danish author Karen Blixen — to the Karen Blixen Museum. The 1912 Cape-Dutch farmhouse where Blixen ran a coffee farm on the slopes of the Ngong Hills is preserved almost exactly as it appeared in her memoir 'Out of Africa'. Rooms still carry her furniture and personal effects; the wide verandah looks out across lawns toward the blue silhouette of the Ngong Hills, the same vista that haunted her writing. Knowledgeable guides bring both the colonial era and the literary legacy to vivid life.

The entire outing is relaxed and perfectly paced for first-time Nairobi visitors, families, or travellers with a free morning between safari legs. Air-conditioned transport connects both sites with your hotel, and an English-speaking guide ensures you leave with context, stories, and a genuine connection to this remarkable African capital.

Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum & Nairobi Highlights

Your guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel mid-morning and heads southwest through the city toward Karen, arriving at the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife's Giraffe Centre where you step onto the raised feeding platform to hand-feed Rothschild's giraffes at eye level — an exhilarating close encounter with one of Africa's rarest large mammals. After exploring the centre's forest boardwalk and conservation exhibits, a short drive brings you to the 1912 Cape-Dutch farmhouse of the Karen Blixen Museum, where costumed guides lead you through rooms preserved from the 'Out of Africa' era, and the Ngong Hills shimmer on the horizon just as Blixen described them. By early afternoon you are returned to your hotel, refreshed and with a richer sense of Nairobi's layered character.
