Overview

Akagera National Park is Rwanda's best-kept safari secret — a rolling 1,122 km² mosaic of acacia woodland, open savanna, papyrus swamps, and a glittering chain of Rift Valley lakes pressed against the Tanzanian border. Unlike Rwanda's misty volcanic highlands, this is classic East African savanna: golden grass horizons interrupted by granite kopjes, red-dirt tracks threading through fever-tree corridors, and birdsong dense enough to drown the engine at dawn.

Your driver-guide meets you at Kigali International Airport and transfers you into the capital for a late-morning check-in and freshen-up. After lunch, you visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial — one of Africa's most thoughtfully curated sites — where gardens of remembrance and well-documented exhibits provide an honest introduction to Rwanda's 1994 tragedy and its extraordinary path to reconciliation. The visit typically takes 1.5–2 hours and sets a meaningful backdrop for the country's present-day conservation achievements. Depart the capital in the late afternoon for the three-hour drive east through terraced hillsides and banana groves, arriving at your lodge inside Akagera just in time for sundowners and a welcome dinner under the stars.

Big Five Game Drives & Lake Ihema Boat Cruise

Elephants are commonly spotted at the southern watering holes in the cool morning light, and buffalo herds often dot the hillsides in their hundreds. Rhino & Lion Tracking + Conservation Tour

An early departure gives you the best chance of locating Akagera's precious black rhinos in the northern sector — the reintroduced population has grown steadily and tracking them with an anti-poaching ranger adds a visceral sense of purpose to the sighting.
