'Tis Abay' means 'great smoke' in Amharic, and after the rains (June through September) the name is literal: the Blue Nile pours over a basalt escarpment in a 45-metre curtain that generates a perpetual rainbow and a roar you feel in your chest before you see the cascade. A gentle thirty-minute walk across a Portuguese-built 17th-century stone bridge and through highland farmland brings you to the best viewpoint, where spray-soaked fig trees lean over the gorge and groups of Gelada baboons sometimes forage along the rim.

An early-morning domestic flight whisks you northwest from Addis Ababa across the Ethiopian Highlands, landing in Bahir Dar in under an hour — the Nile valley and the glittering expanse of Lake Tana coming into view on your descent. After a warm welcome at the airport, your guide transfers you to your lakeside hotel, where the palm-lined promenade and the gentle slap of water set the tone for the days ahead. The afternoon is yours to settle in: take a leisurely stroll along the Bahir Dar waterfront, browse the local market for hand-woven shawls and Ethiopian coffee, and watch tankwa fishermen paddle their papyrus boats across the gilded evening lake. Dinner at the hotel introduces you to the rich spiced stews of Amhara cuisine — injera, tibs, and shiro — as the sun drops behind the far escarpment.
Breakfast at the hotel before boarding a traditional motorboat for a full-day cruise across Lake Tana to the island and peninsula monasteries that define Ethiopian Orthodox heritage. You will visit Ura Kidane Mihret on the forested Zege Peninsula — its circular church wrapped in 14th-century murals of extraordinary colour and detail — and glide to at least one island sanctuary such as Narga Selassie or Entos Eyesu, where robed priests and the smell of frankincense transport you to a world unchanged for centuries. Return to Bahir Dar for dinner and an overnight at the hotel.
