Overview
The Congo-Nile Trail is one of Africa's most spectacular cycling routes, tracing the full length of Lake Kivu's eastern shoreline through Rwanda's legendary Thousand Hills. Stretching roughly 227 kilometres between Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the north and Cyangugu in the south, the trail weaves through terraced coffee and tea plantations, dense banana groves, and waterside fishing villages where dugout pirogues bob in turquoise bays. On this guided five-day mountain-bike expedition you ride the most dramatic sections while a fully equipped support vehicle shadows your progress, carrying luggage and providing mechanical backup so you can focus entirely on the ride.
The landscape shifts constantly as altitude rises and falls between 1,480 m at lake level and over 2,200 m on the highland ridges. Long descents reward every hard-won climb with views of the Congo's Virunga volcanoes shimmering across the water — a scene that never loses its power. At dusk the lake glows amber and fishing canoes paddle out with lanterns, a centuries-old ritual that plays out each evening regardless of who is watching from the shore.
Beyond the physical challenge, the trail is a cultural corridor. You will stop at a working coffee-washing station to trace your morning cup from red cherry to parchment, sharing tea with the cooperative farmers who grow Rwanda's celebrated washed arabica. Village children sprint alongside your wheels with shrieks of delight, and roadside fruit sellers offer fresh passion fruit and pineapple that taste like they were made for a cyclist's mid-ride stop. Accommodation is chosen for lakeside character — small lodges and eco-camps where dinner is served on open terraces above the water.
This itinerary is graded challenging: total elevation gain across the route exceeds 4,500 m and some days include sustained climbs of 500–700 m. Riders should be comfortable on a mountain bike and have a reasonable base fitness. No technical singletrack expertise is required; all surfaces are dirt roads and improved gravel tracks. The support vehicle means you can always opt to skip a punishing section without missing the destination — making the expedition accessible to strong recreational cyclists as well as seasoned tourers.
