Diani Beach & Shimba Hills — 5 Days

White-sand coral beach plus sable antelope and Sheldrick Falls.

Overview

Diani Beach is consistently ranked among Africa's finest stretches of coastline, and for good reason — talcum-white coral sand fringed by swaying palms, turquoise Indian Ocean water warm enough to swim in year-round, and a reef ecosystem that shelters everything from hawksbill turtles to colourful shoals of angelfish. This five-day itinerary pairs three full beach days with an inland excursion into Shimba Hills National Reserve, giving you a genuine taste of Kenya's Coast Province without the long-haul drives of upcountry safari.

Shimba Hills National Reserve sits just 33 kilometres inland from Diani and rises to over 450 metres above sea level, creating a cool, misty highland forest that feels worlds apart from the beach. It is the only Kenyan stronghold of the endangered sable antelope — a regal creature with swept-back scimitar horns and a chestnut coat that darkens to near-black in mature bulls. The reserve also shelters elephants, buffalo, the rare roan antelope, leopard, and a rich understorey of birdlife including the African fish eagle and the Trumpeter hornbill. A guided walk to the spectacular Sheldrick Falls — a multi-tiered cascade dropping through coastal forest — rounds out the inland experience.

Back on the coast, Diani offers as much or as little activity as you choose. Snorkelling over the fringing reef, a dhow sunset cruise in the tradition of Swahili seafarers, kayaking through mangrove channels, or simply reclining under a makuti-thatched banda with a fresh coconut in hand — the options are entirely yours. The village of Diani itself is a pleasant mix of beach bars, Swahili restaurants, and curio stalls where local artisans sell carved ebony and kikoi cloth.

The itinerary is rated easy and suits families, couples, and first-time Africa visitors. All road transfers are in comfortable safari vehicles, accommodation is at a well-appointed half-board beach resort, and the single game-drive day into Shimba Hills is accompanied by a Kenya Wildlife Service ranger. From Mombasa's Moi International Airport or the Likoni Ferry crossing, Diani is roughly an hour's drive south — making arrival and departure logistics refreshingly simple.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

Arrival in Mombasa — Transfer to Diani Beach

Your Kenya coast escape begins at Mombasa's Moi International Airport or the Likoni Ferry crossing, where your private driver meets you for the scenic one-hour transfer south along the coastal highway to Diani Beach. Check in to your resort in the early afternoon, settle into your sea-view room, and take your first stroll along the pristine coral-sand beach. The evening is yours to enjoy a sundowner on the resort terrace as the Indian Ocean sky turns amber and rose.

Full Day at Leisure on Diani Beach

Diani's reef-protected lagoon is ideal for snorkelling — ask your resort activity desk to arrange a morning trip to the fringing coral where turtles, parrotfish, and moray eels are regular sightings. The afternoon is completely at your own pace: laze on the white sand, browse the village craft stalls for kikoi cloth and Swahili brasswork, or join an optional sunset dhow cruise drifting along the coast in the tradition of centuries-old Swahili trade routes. Dinner is served at the resort.

Shimba Hills Game Drive & Sheldrick Falls Walk

An early breakfast fuels a 7 am departure inland toward Shimba Hills National Reserve, 33 kilometres from Diani and rising through coastal forest to cool highland savannah at over 450 metres elevation. Your Kenya Wildlife Service ranger joins at the gate for a morning 4x4 game drive in search of the reserve's iconic sable antelope — great curved-horned bulls and their ochre-coated herds are a genuinely rare sighting outside this reserve — alongside elephants, buffalo, and a superb variety of coastal forest birds. After a packed lunch in the bush, a guided nature walk descends through towering fig trees and raphia palms to the multi-tiered Sheldrick Falls, a hidden cascade named for the conservation family who championed Kenya's elephants. You return to Diani by late afternoon, refreshed by the highland air.

Second Beach Day — Sea, Sun & Swahili Culture

With one safari day behind you, today is pure coast. Consider an early morning walk along the tideline at low tide to see the coral pools teeming with starfish, crabs, and sea urchins, or arrange a kayak paddle through the nearby mangrove channel — a quietly magical ecosystem that shelters juvenile fish and nesting kingfishers. In the afternoon, explore Old Town Ukunda's small market and taste a freshly grilled samaki (fish) at a local beachside grill for an authentic Swahili flavour before heading back to the resort for dinner.

Departure — Farewell to the Coast

Enjoy a final breakfast overlooking the Indian Ocean before your private vehicle transfers you back north to Mombasa's Moi International Airport or your onward destination, allowing ample time for check-in. If your flight departs late, your driver can stop at the historic Fort Jesus on Mombasa Island — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — for a brief visit before the airport drop-off.
