   Arrival in Addis Ababa

   Fly into Bole International Airport, where your guide meets you in the arrivals hall and transfers you to your hotel in the Bole district. The afternoon is free to rest and acclimatise to Addis Ababa's 2,355-metre elevation. In the evening, gather for a welcome briefing over a traditional tej honey-wine and injera dinner, setting the scene for the ten days ahead.

   Addis Ababa City Tour

   A full day exploring the Ethiopian capital opens at the National Museum, home to the 3.2-million-year-old Australopithecus fossil 'Lucy' and galleries tracing Ethiopia's imperial dynasties. After lunch in the Piazza neighbourhood, visit the vast Merkato market — one of Africa's largest open-air bazaars — then climb to Holy Trinity Cathedral, the resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie and the site of the most ornate stained glass in East Africa. The day closes with a traditional coffee ceremony at a local home.

   Fly to Bahir Dar — Lake Tana Monasteries

   An early Ethiopian Airlines flight delivers you to Bahir Dar on the southern shore of Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile, within an hour. Board a traditional tankwa papyrus boat to visit two or three of the lake's island monasteries — Ura Kidane Mehret on the Zege Peninsula is renowned for its circular tukul church with floor-to-ceiling medieval murals. The afternoon is spent at the Blue Nile Falls viewpoint, a fifteen-minute walk through eucalyptus forest to 'Tis Issat' ('smoking water'), where the river drops forty-five metres in a broad curtain of mist.

   Bahir Dar to Gondar — Royal Enclosure

   Drive north on the tarmac road through green highland farmland to Gondar (approximately three hours), passing through the market town of Woreta. On arrival, spend the afternoon inside the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), walking among the six castles built by different emperors — Fasilides, Iyasu the Great, and their successors — and the royal stables and bathhouse. As the sun lowers, step outside the walls to the exquisitely decorated Debre Birhan Selassie Church, whose famous ceiling of 135 painted cherub faces is among the most reproduced images in Ethiopian art.

   Gondar to Simien Mountains — Sankaber Camp

   After breakfast, drive northeast on a dramatically scenic road that climbs steadily through juniper and hagenia forest to the Simien Mountains National Park boundary at Debark (roughly 100 km). After formalities and meeting your mandatory armed scout, continue to Sankaber camp at 3,250 metres, where large troops of Gelada baboons — the world's only grass-grazing primates — graze the short alpine turf within metres of the lodge. The late afternoon is ideal for your first walk along the escarpment edge, with vertical drops of over a thousand metres into the Rift Valley far below.

   Simien Mountains — Geech & Imet Gogo Trek

   A full trekking day in the Simiens (approximately 10–14 km, 4–5 hours walking, moderate gradient). The route traverses Geech plateau past dense stands of giant lobelia — the alien-looking endemic that grows a single spike of purple flowers after decades of growth — to the viewpoint at Imet Gogo (3,926 m), widely considered the finest panorama in Ethiopia. Keep watch for Ethiopian wolves, Walia ibex clinging to near-vertical cliffs, and lammergeier bearded vultures riding the thermals. Your scout, lodge staff, and vehicle carry lunch to a picnic spot en route.

   Simien to Axum — Ancient Stelae Fields

   Drive back to Gondar this morning, then catch an afternoon domestic flight to Axum (Aksum), the former capital of an empire that flourished from roughly 100 to 940 AD and was one of the world's four great powers of late antiquity. Check in and, if time allows before dusk, walk to the Northern Stelae Field to stand beneath the 33-metre King Ezana stele and the stump of the Great Stele — at 33 metres when standing, the largest monolith ever quarried. Your guide introduces the Axumite coinage, trade networks, and the tradition that the Ark of the Covenant rests in the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion.

   Axum — Temples, Tombs & Queen of Sheba

   A full day of Axum's extraordinary antiquities, beginning at the Archaeological Museum and the Tomb of King Kaleb and King Gebre Meskel — underground royal chambers decorated with granite beams that fit together without mortar. Walk to the ruins of the Queen of Sheba's Palace (Dungur Palace), an extensive 4th-century residential compound, and the ancient stone throne used for coronation ceremonies. The afternoon visit to the Church of St Mary of Zion complex includes the Treasury, where priests display ancient crowns and golden processional crosses; the adjacent chapel — believed by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church to house the original Ark of the Covenant — cannot be entered but its significance resonates powerfully from outside.

   Fly to Lalibela — Rock-Hewn Churches

   A short morning flight from Axum to Lalibela crosses dramatic Tigray highlands before descending to the airstrip perched on a ridge above the medieval town. Settle into your lodge and then descend into the Northern Group of rock churches this afternoon — beginning with the sheer scale of Bet Medhane Alem, the largest rock-hewn church on earth, its roof supported by 38 stone pillars carved from the same living basalt as the walls. As the afternoon light turns amber, cross the symbolic River Jordan trench to Bet Maryam, whose carved exterior is alive with geometric reliefs, and Bet Meskel with its simple painted cross. White-robed pilgrims and priests in ceremonial gold vestments move through the trenches in constant procession.

    Lalibela — South Group & Bet Giyorgis, Fly to Addis

    Rise before dawn to visit Bet Golgotha and Bet Mikael by candlelight as morning prayers echo through the rock — the most atmospheric hour in Lalibela. After breakfast, walk the connecting passage to the isolated Bet Giyorgis (House of St George), the most photogenic of the eleven churches: a perfect Greek cross carved 12 metres deep into a rock pit, its stepped exterior unblemished after 800 years. A late-afternoon flight returns you to Addis Ababa, where the tour concludes on arrival at Bole International Airport with memories of an ancient civilisation unlike anywhere else on earth.
