Jane Goodall's Gombe — 50+ habituated chimps in East Africa's smallest national park.
Gombe Stream National Park sits on the steep, forested escarpment above the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika — the world's longest and second-deepest freshwater lake — covering just 56 square kilometres yet harbouring one of the most famous and intensively studied wild chimpanzee populations on the planet. In 1960 Dr Jane Goodall arrived here as a young researcher and began observations that would overturn scientific understanding of tool use, social behaviour and primate cognition. Her Gombe Stream Research Centre still operates, and the Kasekela chimpanzee community she first documented — now more than 50 individuals — is fully habituated to human observers, allowing encounters at close range in their own forested world.
Reaching Gombe is itself part of the adventure. From Kigoma, the nearest town on Lake Tanganyika, a motor-launch cuts north for roughly two hours along a coastline of palm-fringed beaches and fishing villages that feel unchanged for decades. The park is accessible only by water, and that deliberate isolation is what keeps Gombe pristine. Upon stepping ashore you trade the modern world for a cathedral of fig trees, mahogany and tangled lianas threaded by fast-moving mountain streams that cascade down from the Rift Valley walls to the lake shore.
Chimpanzee trekking here is an immersive, on-foot experience through genuine montane forest — not a wide trail but a labyrinth of chimp paths where your guide reads branch-breaks, half-eaten figs and distant hooting to locate the Kasekela group. Encounters typically unfold at distances of just a few metres as chimps groom, play, feed or simply rest in the canopy overhead. Beyond chimps, olive baboons, red-tailed and red colobus monkeys, giant forest squirrels and well over 200 bird species share the park, while hippos and the occasional crocodile patrol the lake shallows.
Evening life at Gombe Forest Lodge revolves around the veranda above the lake, where the deep blue of Tanganyika fades to violet as the sun drops behind the Congo hills on the opposite shore. The lake itself is a biodiversity hotspot — its cichlid fish fauna rivals any coral reef in species richness — and guided snorkelling or kayaking in the crystalline shallows is an excellent way to spend the afternoon after your trekking permit expires. This is the kind of travel that leaves a genuine mark: few wildlife experiences in Africa match the eye-to-eye intensity of sitting metres from a wild chimpanzee that is entirely uninterested in your presence.

An early morning flight from Arusha (with a connection at Dar es Salaam or direct charter) delivers you to Kigoma on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika by mid-morning. Your guide meets you at the airstrip and transfers you to the jetty, where a private motor-launch is waiting for the two-hour lake crossing north to Gombe — a scenic ride past fishing dhows and villages clinging to forested hillsides. You arrive at the park shore by early afternoon, settle into your lake-view banda at Gombe Forest Lodge and enjoy a light lunch before an afternoon orientation walk along the shore trail, spotting olive baboons and the first flickers of red colobus in the canopy above.
Rise before dawn for a full English breakfast, then head straight into the forest with your guide and a specialist chimp tracker who has followed the Kasekela community for years. The trek winds up steep, stream-cut valleys through riverine fig and mahogany forest, guided by hooting calls and the rustle of branches overhead. When you locate the Kasekela group — a permit allows one continuous hour with them — the experience is extraordinary: individuals groom and play at arm's reach, females with infants peer down from low branches and dominant males may stage theatrical displays along the trail. After the permit period ends you continue hiking to Kakombe Waterfall, a curtain of mist-shrouded water cascading into a mossy gorge that Goodall noted chimps regarded with apparent awe. Return to the lodge by early afternoon for lunch, then spend the rest of the day snorkelling in the gin-clear shallows of Tanganyika, birdwatching along the beach or simply watching the sun sink behind the distant Congo escarpment.
An early morning walk along the shore trail offers a final chance to glimpse baboons and forest birds before you pack and board the motor-launch back to Kigoma (approximately two hours). From the jetty your guide transfers you to the airstrip in time for the afternoon flight back to Arusha, closing a compact but extraordinarily concentrated wildlife journey. Depending on flight schedules you may have time in Kigoma to visit the Ujiji memorial — the spot where Stanley famously greeted Livingstone in 1871 — before heading to the airport.
