Few journeys in Africa carry the emotional weight of this ten-day odyssey across two countries and two entirely different wilderness worlds. You begin in Rwanda — the Land of a Thousand Hills — where mist-wrapped volcanoes cradle the last mountain gorillas on earth. Arriving in Kigali, you have the chance to understand Rwanda's remarkable transformation through a morning at the Genocide Memorial before heading north into the Virunga highlands, where the drama of a gorilla trek unfolds in primary forest thick with Hagenia trees, giant lobelias, and the murmur of unseen wildlife.
The moment you find your gorilla family — perhaps the Amahoro group or the Susa family resting in a bamboo clearing — time seems to stop. Silverbacks drum and watch with a stillness that is at once intimidating and deeply moving. A full hour in their presence, just metres away, is one of the most profound wildlife encounters Africa offers. Rwanda's commitment to gorilla conservation, reflected in the premium permit system, ensures that these encounters remain intimate and ethically managed.
From the Virungas you board a light aircraft and cross the Rift Valley into Tanzania, landing near Arusha on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. From here the narrative shifts dramatically: open savannahs replace rainforest, and the scale of the landscape expands to something almost incomprehensible. The Serengeti — arguably the greatest wildlife reserve on the planet — stretches over 14,763 square kilometres of rolling grass plains, kopje-studded ridges, and acacia woodland where lion prides lounge and cheetahs scan the horizon.
Depending on the month you travel, you may witness the Great Migration in full spectacle: hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra thundering across the plains or plunging into the Grumeti and Mara rivers in death-defying crossings. Game drives at dawn and dusk from your luxury tented camp put you in the middle of it all. The journey ends with a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera that acts as a natural enclosure for one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa — including the critically endangered black rhino — before a final night in Arusha marks the close of a trip most travellers describe as life-changing.

Touch down at Kigali International Airport, where an AECONS representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in the leafy Nyarutarama or Kimihurura neighbourhood. The evening is yours to rest and adjust to the altitude and time zone after your international flight. Kigali is widely regarded as one of Africa's cleanest and most organised capitals — a fitting first impression of modern Rwanda.
After breakfast your guide leads a moving morning at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where the history of the 1994 tragedy and Rwanda's extraordinary path to reconciliation are presented with dignity and depth. After lunch you drive north through the lush terraced hillsides toward Musanze (Ruhengeri) and the Virunga Mountains, arriving at your lodge in time to attend the gorilla trek briefing and enjoy sundowners with a view of the volcanic peaks.
An early pre-dawn start brings you to the park headquarters at Kinigi by 07:00 for the final briefing, group assignment, and the iconic permit check. With your ranger guide and trackers, you push up through bamboo thickets and Hagenia forest until you locate your assigned gorilla family — the trek can take anywhere from 45 minutes to four hours depending on the animals' movements that morning. Once found, you spend a precious hour watching silverbacks, mothers, and playful juveniles go about their day in the mist — an experience measured in heartbeats, not minutes. Return to the lodge for a late lunch and an afternoon to process what you have witnessed.
A leisurely morning allows time for an optional walk around the Musanze caves or a visit to a local community project before your driver transfers you back to Kigali. Early afternoon you check in for your onward flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) — a journey of roughly two hours that dramatically shifts the landscape below from green highlands to the vast brown savannah of northern Tanzania. An AECONS Tanzania representative meets you at KIA for the drive or short transfer to your Arusha overnight.
After an early breakfast your Tanzania guide loads the 4×4 and you begin the drive west, passing through Arusha town and the agricultural foothills before the landscape opens into the sweeping Maasai Steppe. Entering the Serengeti through the Naabi Hill Gate, the plains unfold in every direction and game viewing begins immediately — kori bustards, Thomson's gazelle, and often the first lion sightings of the trip. You break for a bush picnic lunch before pushing on to your tented camp in the central Seronera region, positioned close to the year-round wildlife of the Seronera River valley.
A full day with two extended game drives lets you immerse yourself in the rhythm of the Serengeti ecosystem. Dawn drives catch predators returning from a night hunt — lion prides draped over kopjes, hyena clans at kills, and the occasional leopard retreating into a sausage tree. Midday you return to camp for lunch and a siesta, then head out again as the golden afternoon light transforms the plains. Depending on the season, your guide positions you for wildebeest and zebra concentrations or river crossing action in the north.
Today you drive north toward the Mara River — the most dramatic stage of the Great Migration circuit. The northern Serengeti's rolling hills conceal enormous herds that gather at the riverbanks, building courage for a crossing watched by waiting crocodiles. Even outside the peak crossing months (July–October) this corridor pulses with wildebeest, zebra, topi, and the predators that shadow them. You may overnight at a fly camp or mobile camp deep in the northern sector, trading comfort for unrivalled proximity to the action.
A final dawn drive in the northern Serengeti maximises your time in this remote wilderness before you drive or take a short charter flight south toward the Ngorongoro highlands. The transition from open plains to the forested crater rim is striking — temperatures drop, red-necked spurfowl call from the roadside, and Maasai herders move their cattle along the escarpment. Check in to your rim lodge before late afternoon, when the mist begins to roll in from the east.
Descend the steep crater wall at first light into the 260 sq km floor of the Ngorongoro Caldera, one of the UNESCO World Heritage wonders of Africa. The crater's closed ecosystem harbours roughly 25,000 large mammals year-round: enormous lion coalitions, spotted hyena clans, elephants with sweeping tusks, and — with luck and patience — the critically endangered black rhino patrolling the short-grass plains near Ngoitoktok Spring. Lake Magadi draws flamingos and wading birds, while the Lerai Forest's acacia trees shelter buffalo herds and vervet monkeys. A full crater day with a picnic lunch on the floor ensures you experience the full arc of activity from dawn predator encounters to the herd movements of late afternoon.
A final breakfast on the crater rim, looking down into the caldera you now know intimately, is a fitting farewell to Tanzania. Your guide drives you back to Arusha — roughly two to three hours — with time for a stop at a Maasai market or cultural centre if your flight schedule allows. Drop-off is at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport for your onward international connection, carrying memories of gorilla encounters in misty Rwandan forests and lion-dotted savannah stretching to every horizon.
