   Nairobi to Samburu — Into the Northern Frontier

   After an early morning briefing and meet-and-greet with your driver-guide at your Nairobi hotel, you set off northward through the Mt Kenya foothills, the landscape shading from highland tea and coffee farms into drier acacia scrubland as you cross the equator. A roadside stop at the equator marker makes for a memorable photo opportunity. You arrive at Samburu in the early afternoon with time for a scenic lunch and a refreshing rest before your first afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, where Samburu's 'Special Five' — reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, gerenuk, and Somali ostrich — often appear within the first hour.

   Full Day in Samburu — The Special Five and River Giants

   A pre-dawn wake-up call delivers you into the reserve as the light turns golden, the best hour to catch lion on a kill or leopard retreating into dense riverine bush before the heat builds. Your guide threads the network of tracks between the open floodplains and the shaded riverbanks, where large elephant herds wade and splash, sometimes crossing right in front of the vehicle. Afternoon drives focus on the southern tributaries and Archer's Post area where gerenuk are most commonly spotted standing upright to strip leaves from tall acacias. Return to camp as the sky turns copper and violet over the Mathews Range to the north.

   Samburu to Lake Nakuru — Rift Valley Descent

   After an early breakfast and a final morning drive to catch any overnight predator activity, you depart Samburu and head southwest through Isiolo and Nanyuki, skirting the eastern flanks of Mt Kenya — Africa's second-highest peak whose glaciated twin peaks are visible on clear mornings. The drive crosses the equator again and descends the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment, with views opening across the soda lakes of the central valley. You reach Lake Nakuru National Park by mid-afternoon, checking in just in time for a late afternoon game drive along the lakeshore where flamingos wade in the shallows and white rhino graze the grassy margins.

   Lake Nakuru — Rhinos, Flamingos and the Rift Valley Panorama

   Spend a full day exploring Nakuru's compact but wildlife-rich park, beginning with a circuit of the southern lakeshore where flamingo concentrations are densest and Rothschild's giraffe — one of Africa's rarest subspecies — browse the yellow-barked fever trees. The park's fenced rhino sanctuary makes it one of Kenya's most reliable locations for encountering both black and white rhino at close range; your guide knows the favoured grazing areas and watering holes. A midday stop at Baboon Cliff, perched above the park, offers sweeping panoramas of the entire lake and the Rift Valley walls. Afternoon drives probe the forest trails of the park's western sector in search of lion, leopard, and waterbuck.

The escarpment drop into the Mara ecosystem is dramatic — the land opens into a sea of golden grass stretching to the Tanzanian border, and the sight of the first wildebeest columns or distant giraffe signals that you have arrived in one of the world's greatest wildlife theatres.    Full Day in the Maasai Mara — Big Five and the River Crossing

   Today is a full day at your disposal in the Maasai Mara, the reserve that encapsulates East Africa's safari mythology. A dawn departure puts you alongside resident lion prides during their morning hunts, and your guide monitors radio communications with other vehicles to track cheetah and leopard sightings. Depending on the season, the Mara River crossings — where wildebeest and zebra launch themselves into crocodile-patrolled waters in massive waves — are the highlight, and your guide positions the vehicle for unobstructed views. A bush picnic lunch in the shade of a sausage tree is followed by an afternoon drive targeting elephant family groups in the Mara Triangle and the open plains where Thomson's gazelle and topi graze in their thousands.

   Maasai Mara to Nairobi — Final Dawn Drive and Departure

   Rise early for a last sunrise game drive across the Mara plains — often the most rewarding of the week, as predators finish the night's hunting and elephants head to their daytime resting spots in the woodlands. After a leisurely breakfast you begin the drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon in time for onward connections or an overnight stay in the city. Your driver-guide will drop you at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, bringing your grand Kenya circuit to a close with memories of three of the continent's finest wildlife destinations.
