If you only ever do one Kenya safari, make it this one. Ten days and six of the country's most storied reserves take you from the sun-baked acacia scrub of the north all the way to the snow-capped silhouette of Kilimanjaro in the south, with the drama of the Great Rift Valley unfolding between them. You will cross vastly different ecosystems — each with its own cast of wildlife, its own light, its own rhythm — and come away understanding Kenya not as a single postcard image but as a layered, living landscape.
The journey opens in Samburu National Reserve, a semi-arid wilderness straddling the Ewaso Ng'iro River where the Samburu Special Five hold court: reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich. From there the route swings south-west to Ol Pejeta Conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau, home to the world's largest black-rhino sanctuary and the last two northern white rhinos on earth. This is big-five territory with a conservation story woven through every game drive. Lake Nakuru National Park follows, its shallow alkaline waters still attracting concentrations of flamingo alongside white rhino, Rothschild's giraffe and leopard in the yellow-barked fever trees.
A boat excursion on the papyrus-fringed shores of Lake Naivasha, with hippo watching from the water and African fish eagle calling overhead, provides a gentle mid-circuit pause before the safari reaches its crescendo — three nights in the Maasai Mara ecosystem, whose endless grass plains and seasonal wildebeest migration have made it the benchmark against which all African wildlife destinations are measured. The circuit closes with Amboseli National Park, where elephant herds numbering in the hundreds move beneath the permanent snowfields of Mount Kilimanjaro in one of Africa's most iconic vistas.
Throughout the circuit you travel in purpose-built 4×4 vehicles with open roof hatches, accompanied by professional driver-guides whose knowledge of animal behaviour and bush craft turns every game drive into a masterclass. After an early breakfast in Nairobi your driver-guide collects you and you head north through the highlands, crossing the equator before the landscape opens into the vast semi-arid plains of Samburu County. The drive takes roughly five hours, arriving in time for lunch at the lodge and an afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro River. In the golden late-afternoon light, reticulated giraffe and Grevy's zebra are almost guaranteed sightings, and lion and leopard are regularly spotted in the riverine acacia thickets.
A full day dedicated to Samburu's distinctive wildlife gives you the unhurried time this reserve deserves. Morning and afternoon game drives follow the river and fan out into the dry sand-luggas where gerenuk browse standing upright on their hind legs, and Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich roam terrain too harsh for many plains species. Elephant families are a daily constant here, crossing the river with casual confidence, and with luck a leopard will be draped in the canopy of a desert date tree by late afternoon.
Leaving Samburu you drive south-west across the Laikipia Plateau, the rolling grasslands giving way to Mount Kenya's cloud-wreathed peaks on the horizon. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is reached by early afternoon, allowing time to settle in before visiting the Baraka rhino sanctuary to meet the last two northern white rhinos — Sudan's daughters Najin and Fatu — a humbling encounter with the edge of extinction. An evening game drive often yields cheetah on the open plains and lion resting near the Ewaso Ng'iro River as it threads through the property.
Ol Pejeta hosts Kenya's largest black-rhino population and your full day here is devoted to exploring its varied habitats — open savannah, swamp margins and riverine forest — in search of all five members of the Big Five. Morning drives regularly turn up black rhino moving through the bush, while lion prides and elephant are seen throughout the day. An optional chimpanzee sanctuary visit can be arranged, offering an unexpected primate encounter on the Laikipia Plateau.
The road south from Laikipia descends into the Great Rift Valley, and by mid-morning you are scanning the shores of Lake Nakuru from the escarpment viewpoint — a sight that, depending on season, can include tens of thousands of lesser flamingo turning the lake's margins pink. An afternoon game drive explores the park's varied interior, where white rhino graze in family groups, Rothschild's giraffe move through yellow fever-tree woodland, and leopard are frequently spotted resting in the tree canopy or dragging kills aloft. The lake itself hosts African fish eagle, pelican and cormorant colonies.
After a morning game drive in Nakuru, you continue south along the Rift Valley floor to Lake Naivasha, a fresh-water lake ringed by papyrus beds and yellow-barked acacia forest. The afternoon is spent on a boat excursion drifting among pods of hippo whose ears and eyes barely break the water's surface, while African fish eagle spiral overhead and kingfishers dart from the reed banks. Crescent Island — a wildlife sanctuary reachable by boat — offers a rare walking encounter with giraffe, zebra and waterbuck against the lake backdrop.
Today's drive crosses the Mau Escarpment and descends onto the Mara ecosystem — one of the most dramatic arrivals in African travel. As the tarmac gives way to murram tracks the grasslands open up and the familiar silhouettes of acacia trees, termite mounds and distant thunderstorms over Tanzania announce that you have arrived in the heart of the Great Migration corridor. An afternoon game drive introduces the Mara's resident lion prides, vast elephant families and, between July and October, the churning wildebeest columns whose river crossings have captivated naturalists for generations.
A full day in the Maasai Mara is spent entirely in the field, departing before sunrise for the golden hour when predators are still active and the plains are washed in amber. Lion prides with cubs, cheetah scanning from termite-mound vantage points, hyena clans and leopard in the riverine forest along the Talek and Mara rivers form the daily cast. Between July and October the Mara River crossings can occupy an entire morning as thousands of wildebeest and zebra launch themselves into crocodile-patrolled waters — one of nature's most visceral spectacles.
A long but rewarding transfer takes you south and east, skirting the Tanzania border before crossing the Aitong plains and dropping into Amboseli basin by early afternoon. The approach to Amboseli is itself spectacular — Kilimanjaro's glaciated dome materialises on the horizon, framed by acacia woodland, and by the time you reach the swamp margins the mountain fills your windscreen. An afternoon drive visits the open plains and seasonal swamps where Amboseli's legendary elephant families wade chest-deep, and the dusty golden light of late afternoon turns every photograph into a postcard.
Rise early for a final dawn game drive beneath Kilimanjaro's summit — the mountain is often at its clearest in the morning before clouds build, and elephant moving through the swamp mist with the peak behind them is an image that stays with you long after the safari ends. After breakfast you begin the four-to-five hour drive back to Nairobi, arriving at Wilson Airport or your city hotel by mid-afternoon in time for onward connections.
