Hell's Gate & Lake Naivasha Day Tour

Cycle among zebras, hike Ol Njorowa Gorge, and cruise Lake Naivasha's hippos.

Overview

Just ninety kilometres northwest of Nairobi, the Great Rift Valley drops away to reveal one of Kenya's most unusual wild spaces: Hell's Gate National Park. Unlike virtually every other safari destination in East Africa, Hell's Gate lets you step out of the vehicle and move through the wildlife on two wheels. Towering basalt columns, soaring cliffs stained russet and ochre by centuries of geothermal heat, and open savannah grasslands form the backdrop as you pedal past grazing zebra, buffalo, Thomson's gazelle and the occasional oblivious warthog trotting across the track.

The day's centrepiece is a guided hike into Ol Njorowa Gorge, a dramatic slot canyon carved by ancient rivers and still shaped by hot springs and fumaroles that vent steam from deep beneath the Rift floor. The gorge narrows to shoulder-width in places, its smooth volcanic walls streaked green and yellow with mineral deposits. Your guide will point out resident Egyptian vultures and Verreaux's eagles riding thermals above the canyon rim, while fig trees and wild figs provide shade at the canyon floor. This is the same landscape that inspired the animated setting of The Lion King — atmosphere you can actually feel underfoot.

After the gorge, a short drive brings you to the shores of Lake Naivasha, a freshwater haven fringed by yellow-barked acacia and towering fever trees. A private boat glides you out among hippo pods that surface with a rumbling exhale, then submerge with barely a ripple. Hundreds of species of birds work the papyrus fringes — African fish eagles call overhead, malachite kingfishers hover above the lily pads, and great white pelicans drift in loose formations across the shallows. Crescent Island, a wildlife sanctuary in the lake, can often be spotted with giraffe silhouettes moving through the acacias against the Rift escarpment beyond.

This is an ideal day escape for those with limited time in Kenya who still want genuine wildness and physical engagement — not just a windscreen safari. The combination of cycling, hiking and boating makes it accessible to most fitness levels while delivering a full spectrum of Rift Valley scenery and wildlife in a single day.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

Hell's Gate Cycling, Ol Njorowa Gorge & Lake Naivasha Boat Safari

Depart Nairobi early morning (around 07:00) for the scenic two-hour drive along the Naivasha highway, dropping into the Great Rift Valley with sweeping escarpment views en route. Arriving at Hell's Gate National Park, you collect your bicycles and set off on a guided ride through the open savannah, weaving past zebra, buffalo and gazelle before locking the bikes and descending on foot into the cathedral-like chambers of Ol Njorowa Gorge — hot springs, fumaroles and towering mineral-streaked walls making this unlike any other walking experience in Kenya. A short drive to the lake follows, where a private boat takes you quietly among pod after pod of hippos while African fish eagles and kingfishers work the papyrus edges; you return to Nairobi in the late afternoon, typically arriving back by 18:30.
