Kenya's most celebrated wildlife circuit — Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Lake Naivasha — becomes astonishingly accessible on this five-day camping safari. You travel in a shared 4×4 pop-roof safari van with a professional driver-guide, sleep in dome tents already pitched at public campsites inside or beside each park, and eat hearty chef-cooked meals around a communal camp table. The experience strips away the frills without removing a single game drive: you see the same lion prides and flamingo flocks as guests paying three times the price, then drift to sleep with the sounds of the African night just metres from your tent.

The route follows Kenya's iconic Great Rift Valley arc westward from Nairobi onto the sweeping grasslands of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Here, across 1,510 square kilometres of open savannah, the Big Five roam in one of the highest concentrations on the continent. Cheetahs course through golden oat grass at dawn, elephant bulls spar at seasonal waterholes, and if you visit between July and October the Mara River churns with the muscle of a million wildebeest crossing from Tanzania's Serengeti in the Great Migration — one of nature's most visceral spectacles.

Leaving the Mara, the safari climbs back through the Rift escarpment to Lake Nakuru, a shallow soda lake famed for its columns of lesser flamingos that paint the shoreline pink. Nakuru National Park is also one of East Africa's most reliable destinations for endangered black and white rhino, and its acacia-fig woodland shelters leopards, Rothschild's giraffe, and colobus monkeys. A short drive further east brings you to Lake Naivasha, a freshwater highland lake ringed by yellow fever trees and papyrus. An optional (self-funded) boat ride reveals hippo pods lazing in the shallows and hundreds of resident and migratory waterbirds — African fish eagles, malachite kingfishers, African darters — making it an ideal, unhurried final evening in the wild before returning to Nairobi.

After an early morning pick-up from your Nairobi hotel or the airport, your driver-guide briefs the group and you set off westward, descending the dramatic Rift Valley escarpment with sweeping views across the valley floor. The road winds through Narok town — gateway to Maasailand — before the tarmac gives way to murram tracks and the Mara's open savannah stretches out before you. You reach the public campsite in time for lunch, and the afternoon is spent on your first game drive: scanning the grasslands for lion, cheetah, elephant, and the myriad plains antelopes that congregate in their thousands. Return to camp as the sun dips behind the Oloololo escarpment, and your camp chef serves dinner under an ink-black, star-filled sky.

Full Day in the Maasai Mara

Rise before dawn for a pre-breakfast game drive — this is the golden hour when predators are still active and the low light turns every lion and giraffe into a silhouette against amber grass. Back in camp for a hearty breakfast, then out again for a mid-morning drive focused on the Mara River crossings and the Talek River drainage where leopards favour the riverine fig trees. Afternoon finds you ranging deeper into the reserve, tracking radio-collared cheetahs with your guide or watching a hyena clan dismantle a wildebeest carcass — nothing is censored in the Mara. Maasai Mara to Lake Nakuru

An early breakfast and a final short game drive en route to the park gate, then the van climbs back up the escarpment through the Ewaso Nyiro highlands toward Nakuru town. You enter Lake Nakuru National Park by midday and immediately encounter the park's extraordinary density of wildlife in a compact setting — white rhino grazing on the lawn-like plains and waterbuck fringing the lakeshore as you take a packed lunch at a picnic site with views across the soda flats. The afternoon drive circles the lake's southern shore, scanning euphorbia forest for leopards resting in the canopy and checking the water's edge for the flamingo columns that can number in the hundreds of thousands. A crisp highland morning offers a final circuit inside Nakuru — this time focusing on the northern sector's Baboon Cliff viewpoint, which delivers a panorama of the entire lake and its flamingo-ringed margins, before continuing through the acacia-fig woodland where black-and-white colobus monkeys leap between treetops. By mid-morning you depart for Lake Naivasha, the highest and freshest of the Rift Valley lakes, arriving for lunch at a lakeside campsite fringed with yellow fever acacias. The afternoon is unstructured and rewarding: stroll along the shore watching hippos surface, take an optional boat ride (own account) through the papyrus channels, or simply sit with binoculars as African fish eagles and pied kingfishers work the water. The drive back to Nairobi follows the scenic escarpment road through Hell's Gate National Park's outer rim and into the capital, arriving in good time for afternoon or evening international departures.
