Kenya is one of the world's great safari destinations, and this six-day itinerary has been crafted from the ground up with families in mind — children aged 5 to 17 included. Game drives are kept to a comfortable two to three hours so young travellers stay energised and engaged rather than restless, and every lodge along the route has a swimming pool, family rooms, and menus that fussy eaters will actually enjoy.
The route traces a classic Kenyan arc: north-west from Nairobi to the soda lake spectacle of Lake Nakuru, where thousands of lesser flamingos tinge the shallows bright pink and white rhinos graze the surrounding acacia woodland; south to the freshwater paradise of Lake Naivasha, fringed by yellow fever trees and patrolled by hippos; then west into the Maasai Mara, the rolling savannah ecosystem that many wildlife biologists consider the richest on Earth. The Mara's open grass plains give even first-time safari-goers unobstructed views of lions, elephants, zebras, and, depending on the season, the thundering wildebeest migration.
Handson moments are woven into each day so children feel like active participants rather than passengers. They will feed a Rothschild giraffe at the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi, watch rescued elephant calves being bottle-fed at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, glide past yawning hippos and fish eagles on a guided boat ride on Lake Naivasha, and spend a dawn in the Mara watching big cats wake up. These are the memories that stay with children for life — and with parents too.
All game drives use a family-sized 4×4 vehicle with a pop-up roof hatch and an expert AECONS driver-guide who knows how to read animal behaviour and explain it at a level that captivates kids. Park fees, full-board accommodation, and ground transfers are all bundled in, so there are no surprise costs once you are on the ground. The pace is relaxed, the distances are manageable, and the wildlife is exceptional.

After an airport welcome by your AECONS guide, the adventure begins immediately with a visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where orphaned elephant calves bottle-feed just metres away from onlooking children — a heart-melting introduction to Kenya's conservation story. In the afternoon, transfer to the Giraffe Centre to hand-feed Rothschild giraffes from a raised wooden platform, letting kids look these gentle giants directly in the eye. Settle into your Nairobi family lodge for the night, orientating over dinner and talking through what wildlife to look for over the days ahead.
After an early breakfast, drive north-west through the Great Rift Valley escarpment, arriving at Lake Nakuru National Park by mid-morning. The park is one of Kenya's most compact and rewarding — white and black rhinos move through the acacia and euphorbia forest, leopards drape themselves over fig tree branches, and when water levels are right, the alkaline lake turns pink with thousands of lesser flamingos feeding on blue-green algae. An afternoon game drive circles the lake shore, giving the whole family a chance to tick off the Big Five. Check in to your lodge with views across the park before sunset.
Leave Nakuru after breakfast and wind south along the Rift Valley floor to the freshwater shores of Lake Naivasha, arriving in time for lunch at your lodge. In the afternoon, board a flat-bottomed boat with a local guide for a gentle cruise among pods of hippos and vast flocks of African fish eagles, herons, and cormorants — a perfect pace for children who want to see animals without sitting still in a vehicle. The yellow fever acacia trees lining the shore turn golden in the late afternoon light, and Crescent Island (a privately owned wildlife sanctuary) can be seen just offshore.
Today's drive west takes the family through the Mau Escarpment and descending farmland before the landscape opens out onto the great golden grasslands of the Maasai Mara ecosystem. The journey takes approximately four to five hours with a comfort stop en route, and by early afternoon you will be crossing the Mara's boundaries with game already visible from the vehicle windows. An introductory two-hour afternoon game drive sets the tone — lions resting under acacia, topi standing sentinel on termite mounds, and elephants moving in family groups across the open plain. Arrive at camp in time to watch the sun set over the savannah before a full camp dinner under the stars.
Rise before dawn for a full Mara day — the plains look entirely different in the peach and gold of early morning, and predators are most active in the first hours of light. A morning game drive of two to three hours covers the classic Mara circuits: the Mara River crossing points where wildebeest migration crossings occur (July–October), the Talek River corridor favoured by resident lion prides, and the open Musiara Marsh beloved by elephants and buffalo. After lunch and pool time at camp — essential for younger travellers — a shorter afternoon drive chases the golden hour with cheetah and leopard spotting as the priority. Guides tailor the pace and storytelling to the youngest member of your family.
One final early game drive before breakfast makes the most of the Mara dawn — often the best sightings of the entire trip come on the last morning. After a hearty camp breakfast, transfer back to Nairobi (approximately five to six hours), with a comfort and lunch stop along the way. Afternoon arrival in Nairobi allows time for last-minute shopping at a curio market or a refreshment stop before onward flights or hotel check-in. Your driver-guide will drop the family directly at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or city hotel as required.
