Perched at roughly 2,100 metres above sea level in Kenya's Rift Valley highlands, Kericho is the beating heart of East Africa's tea industry — a landscape so relentlessly, impossibly green that first-time visitors often fall silent as the endless rows of manicured tea bushes scroll past the car windows. The altitude gifts the region a cool, misty climate year-round, and the combination of volcanic red soils, reliable rainfall and patient cultivation has made Kericho tea some of the finest orthodox black tea in the world.

This two-day escape from Nairobi immerses you in the full tea cycle, from leaf to cup. After a scenic drive west through the Great Rift Valley escarpment — where acacia-dotted plains give way to highland forest and the air noticeably cools — you arrive at one of the great colonial-era estates that still produces and processes tea on site. You will walk the rows with a picker, learning to select only the perfect two-leaves-and-a-bud that determine quality, feeling the satisfying snap of each pluck and the slow weight of the basket filling at your waist.

The factory tour pulls back the curtain on the transformation: freshly plucked leaf arrives in withering troughs, is mechanically rolled to break the cells, then passes through a controlled fermentation room where the characteristic coppery brightness of Kericho tea develops, before hot-air driers lock in the flavour and the grading tables sort the finished product into BP1 brokens, Pekoe Fannings and Dust — each grade destined for a different auction lot or blending house. The sensory contrast between the grassy, vegetal smell of fresh leaf and the warm, malty aroma of finished tea is genuinely arresting.

The experience closes with a guided tasting in the traditional manner — a strong, amber brew taken with or without milk, alongside a brief explanation of how professional tea tasters assess liquor colour, brightness, briskness and mouth-feel. You stay overnight at the historic Kericho Tea Hotel, set in manicured gardens within the estate grounds, before a relaxed morning and the return drive to Nairobi.
