Overview

Few places in East Africa blend the wild and the coastal as seamlessly as the southern Kenya shoreline between Shimoni and Wasini Island. This three-day journey takes you from Mombasa through the lush Kwale hinterland to Shimoni — a compact fishing village built over a network of coral-limestone caves that were tragically used in the 19th-century slave trade. The mangrove-fringed creek at Shimoni is the gateway to one of Kenya's most pristine marine environments, and your base here puts you at the very edge of the Indian Ocean's turquoise shallows.

The centrepiece of the experience is a full day on Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, reached by traditional hand-painted dhow. Kisite is Kenya's finest coral reef system, spanning four small coral islands and a mosaic of seagrass beds, patch reefs, and deep-water channels. Spinner dolphins and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins ride the bow wave of the dhow on most sailings, and during the October–March season, humpback whale sightings are a genuine possibility. Beneath the surface, visibility often exceeds five metres, revealing staghorn and brain coral heads teeming with parrotfish, wrasse, lionfish, and blacktip reef sharks in the shallower passes. Green and hawksbill sea turtles graze the seagrass beds year-round.

After snorkelling, the dhow ties up at Wasini Island — a tiny car-free community where Swahili culture runs deep, coconut palms line coral-rag paths, and lunch is served fresh from the sea: grilled crab, calamari, and fish caught that morning. The afternoon is spent drifting back across the channel under sail, watching the Kenya coast recede in a haze of salt air and late-afternoon light.

Day three pivots inland to Shimba Hills National Reserve, Kenya's most important coastal forest ecosystem and the last stronghold of the rare sable antelope — a striking, dark-coated bovid with curved scimitar horns that is found nowhere else in the country outside this reserve. Early-morning game drives thread through groves of giant trees, open glades, and ridgeline viewpoints that on clear days reveal the Indian Ocean on the horizon. Elephant, buffalo, leopard, and a rich array of forest birds round out the wildlife checklist before you transfer back to Mombasa.

Mombasa to Shimoni — Coastal Drive & Arrival

After an early-morning pickup from your Mombasa hotel, the drive south along the Likoni Ferry route and the A14 coastal highway takes roughly two hours, passing cashew and coconut estates, roadside fish markets, and the quiet town of Msambweni before descending to the mangrove-lined creek at Shimoni. Check in to your lodge before the afternoon is yours to explore the village, stroll the shoreline, or visit the historic Shimoni Slave Caves — a sobering reminder of the 19th-century dhow trade. An included dinner of Swahili-spiced coastal cuisine sets the tone for the days ahead.

Full Day at Kisite-Mpunguti — Dolphins, Snorkel & Wasini Island Lunch

An early breakfast at the lodge is followed by a short walk to Shimoni jetty, where a traditional wooden dhow awaits. The 40-minute sail across the channel to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is frequently accompanied by pods of spinner and bottlenose dolphins riding the bow wave — cameras ready. Two to three snorkelling sessions are conducted over the park's most spectacular coral formations, where turtles, reef sharks, lionfish, and hundreds of fish species inhabit the coral gardens in clear, warm water. At midday the dhow anchors at Wasini Island for a generous Swahili seafood lunch — whole grilled crab, prawns, calamari, chapati, and tropical fruit served under a makuti-thatched terrace overlooking the channel. The afternoon sail back to Shimoni is leisurely, and the evening is free to relax at the lodge.

Shimba Hills Game Drive & Return to Mombasa

Rise before dawn for a packed breakfast and an early departure inland to Shimba Hills National Reserve, Kenya's only coastal highland forest and the sole sanctuary of the sable antelope in the country. The game drive weaves through dense Afromontane forest, open grassland glades, and elevated ridgelines offering sweeping views toward the Indian Ocean on clear mornings. Sable antelope, elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, and bush pig are regularly encountered, and the forest canopy shelters Silvery-cheeked hornbills, African broadbills, and the Kenya Coast's endemic forest birds. After the game drive, you transfer directly north to Mombasa for drop-off at your hotel or the airport, completing the circuit back through the coastal Kwale lowlands.
