   Nairobi to Ol Pejeta — Into Rhino Country

   After an early breakfast at your Nairobi hotel your guide collects you for the drive north through the foothills of the Aberdares, crossing the equator before arriving at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in time for a midday game drive. The afternoon is spent in the Baraka black rhino sanctuary and the northern white rhino enclosure — a moving encounter with the last two individuals of a subspecies on the edge of extinction. Sundowner drinks on the plains as the outline of Mount Kenya turns rose-gold on the horizon.

   Full Day in Ol Pejeta — Lions, Cheetah and the Great Herds

   Rise before dawn for a full-day game drive across Ol Pejeta's 90,000 acres — one of the most densely stocked private conservancies in East Africa. Morning circuits target the lion prides and resident cheetah families on the open grasslands around Chimpanzee Sanctuary Road, while afternoon drives push north to the Ewaso Nyiro River where buffalo congregate and leopard are regularly seen in the riparian forest. Return to camp for a sundowner and a briefing on tomorrow's journey into Loisaba.

   Ol Pejeta to Loisaba — Escarpment Wilderness

   Morning game drive before driving northwest through the open rangeland of the plateau, passing Laikipia Maasai pastoralist settlements and acacia woodlands alive with dry-country bird species. Arrival at Loisaba by early afternoon opens a choice of activities: an introductory guided walk along the escarpment edge, mountain biking on the plateau tracks or simply relaxing at the lodge overlooking a waterhole busy with elephant families. The evening sky from Loisaba's elevated position is extraordinary — the Milky Way arches directly overhead, unmarred by any city glow.

   Loisaba Star Beds — Horseback Safari at Dawn

   Today belongs to Loisaba's signature experiences. An early wake-up sees you saddled and cantering across the plateau as the sun crests the Karisia Hills — herds of reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra and eland parting ahead of your horses in one of the most exhilarating game encounters available anywhere in Africa. After a bush lunch in the shade of an acacia grove, the afternoon is free for a guided walk or a visit to the Loisaba Community Airstrip before the evening transfer to the star-bed platform: a raised wooden deck open to the sky, your bed freshly made beneath a mosquito net and the Milky Way directly above.

   Loisaba to Il Ngwesi — Community Conservation in the North

   After breakfast on the star-bed deck you drive northeast through increasingly arid acacia-commiphora scrub — the classic northern Kenya landscape that signals you are crossing into Il Ngwesi Group Ranch territory. Il Ngwesi Lodge, perched on a ridge above a permanent waterhole, is the first community-owned eco-lodge in Africa, established by local Maasai in 1996 and still managed entirely by the community today. Afternoon brings a guided walk with a Maasai warrior-ranger, tracking elephant and identifying the medicinal plants and trees that underpin traditional ecological knowledge on this land. Sundowners on the open ridge with views stretching to the Lenkiyio Hills.

6. 6

   Il Ngwesi to Nairobi — Final Game Drive and Return

   A last early-morning walk or game drive around the Il Ngwesi waterhole — elephant often linger well into morning here, and reticulated giraffe and Grevy's zebra are common on the grasslands below the ridge. After a farewell breakfast with the community staff, your guide begins the drive south through Laikipia back to Nairobi, arriving mid-to-late afternoon in time for onward connections or an overnight stay in the city.
