Lake Kivu is one of Africa's eight Great Lakes — a vast, shimmering expanse of 2,700 square kilometres straddling Rwanda's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unlike most African lakes, its high-altitude waters are entirely free of bilharzia and crocodiles, making it one of the few places on the continent where you can swim freely in a wild lake. Volcanic ridges plunge directly into the water, creating a dramatic coastline of deep bays, hidden coves, and forested peninsulas that shelters dozens of inhabited islands.
The Congo Nile Trail is Rwanda's flagship long-distance route — 227 km of footpath and dirt track tracing the lake's entire eastern shoreline from Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the north to Rusizi in the south. It winds through fishing villages, terraced hillside farms, eucalyptus groves, and lakeshore communities whose canoe-fishing traditions have remained largely unchanged for generations. On this five-day itinerary we cherry-pick three of the most rewarding sections: the dramatic northern stretch from Rubavu, the quiet highland trails around Nyamyumba and Rubengera, and the island-dotted southern reach out of Karongi (Kibuye). You hike or mountain-bike depending on terrain and your preference — most participants mix both.
Along the way you encounter a Rwanda that few visitors see beyond the gorilla sector: small-scale palm-oil presses, banana-beer cooperatives, women carrying hand-woven baskets on lakeside paths, and fishermen spreading silver dagaa (lake sardines) to dry on flat rocks at dawn. The landscape constantly surprises — a ridge that suddenly reveals a panorama of Congo's Mitumba Mountains reflected in the water far below, or a descent through chest-high elephant grass that opens onto a quiet beach where children are launching dugout canoes.
Accommodation sits right on the lakeshore, from Rubavu's waterfront guesthouses with views across to Goma's volcanic skyline to Karongi's island lodges reachable only by wooden motorboat. A boat excursion to Napoleon Island — home to one of Africa's largest fruit bat colonies — and Amahoro Island completes the experience. This is active travel at its most rewarding: moderate daily distances (12–20 km per section), genuine cultural encounters, and evenings that end with sundowners over a lake that glows copper at dusk.

After breakfast or an early airport pickup in Kigali, your driver-guide heads west on the scenic RN2/RN4 highway, climbing through the famous Thousand Hills before descending steeply to the lake basin — a roughly 2.5-hour drive that is itself a highlight. You arrive in Rubavu (Gisenyi) by late morning and check into your lakeshore lodge, where the view across the water to Goma and the faint smudge of Nyiragongo volcano's crater rim sets the scene. The afternoon is reserved for a gentle orientation walk along Rubavu's sandy town beach, visiting the bustling fish market where fishermen unload their overnight catch of sambaza (lake sardines), and a briefing from your Congo Nile Trail local guide on the sections ahead.
An early breakfast sets you up for the first full trail day, covering approximately 18 km of the northern Congo Nile Trail south from Rubavu towards Nyamyumba on foot or mountain bike. The route climbs sharply out of town through terraced hillsides planted with cassava and sweet potato, then levels onto a high ridge where the lake spreads out below on your left and the dark green hills of Congo rise beyond. You pass through the villages of Buhanga and Gihira, where local women often line the path selling sugarcane and passion fruit, and stop for a packed lunch at a viewpoint above a quiet bay. The descent to Nyamyumba follows a red-dirt track through banana plantations before the vehicle meets you for the return to Rubavu.
Today you drive south along the lakeshore to the midpoint village of Rubengera, dropping you at the trailhead for the central Congo Nile Trail section — arguably the most dramatic stretch, where the trail hugs a knife-edge ridge with the lake visible on three sides. The 15 km route passes through the community of Kiniha and skirts the Gishwati-Mukura Forest corridor, where you may hear red-tailed monkeys and Rwenzori colobus in the tree canopy above the trail. The path descends through chest-high stands of papyrus to a small fishing beach where your boat picks you up and ferries you 40 minutes south to Karongi, a genuinely memorable lake crossing with the afternoon light turning the water deep blue.
Morning departs by wooden motorboat to Napoleon Island (Île Napoléon), a tiny forested rock in Karongi Bay that is home to one of the largest colonies of straw-coloured fruit bats in East Africa — at dusk their departure cloud can darken the sky for minutes. You arrive mid-morning to avoid the evening rush and explore the island's forested interior with your local guide, listening for the chorus of squeaking and the rustle of leathery wings overhead, then swim off a flat rock in crystal-clear lake water. The afternoon visits Amahoro (Peace) Island and a nearby fishing cooperative before returning to Karongi for a sundowner dinner on the lodge terrace overlooking the bay.
After a final breakfast on the lakeshore, your 4×4 takes the scenic highland road from Karongi back to Kigali — a 2.5 to 3-hour drive that climbs through tea plantations and sweeping valley panoramas characteristic of central Rwanda. There is an optional stop at the Nyamata or Ntarama Genocide Memorial for those who wish to deepen their understanding of Rwanda's recent history and extraordinary national recovery. You arrive in Kigali early afternoon with time for a final lunch in the Kimihurura district before your driver transfers you to Kigali International Airport for onward flights.
