Rock-hewn churches and gelada-rich highland trekking.
Ethiopia's northern highlands harbour two of Africa's most extraordinary experiences, and this seven-day circuit threads them together in a single, seamless journey. You begin in Lalibela, a town perched at 2,600 metres in the Lasta Mountains that has been called the 'African Jerusalem'. Here, medieval craftsmen carved eleven interconnected churches directly downward into solid red volcanic rock, creating subterranean sanctuaries that remain in daily use by robed Orthodox priests and white-shawled pilgrims — a living tradition unchanged for nine centuries. Wandering the narrow trenches and tunnels that link these churches, with incense drifting through candlelit interiors and the distant sound of prayer drums, is an encounter with devotion as architecture.
From Lalibela you fly north to Gondar, the former imperial capital, where a UNESCO-listed royal enclosure shelters six stone castles built between the 17th and 18th centuries — an Afro-Baroque style unlike anything else on the continent. The city's Fasilides Baths, flooded each year for Timkat (Epiphany) celebrations, and the ornate Debre Berhan Selassie church, its ceiling painted with rows of wide-eyed angelic faces, round out a rich half-day of Ethiopian highland culture before the mountains call.
The Simien Mountains form the roof of Africa north of the equator, a plateau shattered by ancient volcanic activity into a dramatic landscape of 4,000-metre escarpments, plunging gorges and cathedral peaks. Three days of guided trekking take you through giant lobelia forests and high-altitude moorlands ablaze with everlasting flowers, with panoramic views stretching to the distant lowlands. The park is the last stronghold of the Ethiopian wolf and the Walia ibex, but it is the gelada — the world's only grass-grazing primate — that steals the show. Troops of hundreds forage in the meadows beside the trail, their scarlet chest patches flashing and their complex social calls filling the crisp highland air.
Throughout the circuit, lodge and camp accommodation is chosen for its position and atmosphere: a stone-built retreat overlooking Lalibela's valleys, a comfortable Gondar guesthouse within the castle district, and a high-altitude camp on the Simien plateau where temperatures drop sharply after sunset and the star field at 3,600 metres is astonishing. This is a tour for travellers who want genuine cultural depth combined with serious highland walking — and who understand that Ethiopia rewards curiosity with experiences found nowhere else on earth.

Arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, where your guide meets you in the arrivals hall and transfers you to your hotel in the Bole district. The evening is free to rest after your international flight, adjust to the altitude of 2,355 metres, and enjoy a welcome dinner featuring injera and traditional Ethiopian stews. An early morning domestic flight (approximately 1 hour) carries you north over the Ethiopian highlands to Lalibela's small hilltop airport. After check-in at your lodge with its sweeping views across the Lasta valley, your cultural guide leads a half-day exploration of the Northern Group of rock-hewn churches, centred on the iconic Bete Medhane Alem — reputedly the largest rock-cut church in the world — and the cruciform Bete Giyorgis (St George's Church), isolated in its own deep courtyard and regarded as the finest of the eleven. Afternoon light falls beautifully into the trenches, and the site is less crowded after mid-afternoon.
A full day devoted to the Southern Group of churches, including the tunnel-linked Bete Maryam, Bete Meskel and Bete Danaghel, as well as the Eastern Group centred on Bete Amanuel, carved with its distinctive stepped exterior columns. Between sites you follow narrow pathways through the living village, past grain stores, eucalyptus groves and market stalls, gaining insight into daily highland life from your guide. In the late afternoon, walk to the hilltop hermitage of Ashetan Maryam for an elevated panorama over the entire Lalibela basin as the afternoon light turns the cliffs amber.
A short morning flight connects Lalibela to Gondar (via Addis Ababa or direct, depending on schedule), the former Gondarine imperial capital founded in 1636. After lunch your guide takes you through the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO World Heritage walled compound containing the grand stone castle of Emperor Fasilides and five successive royal palaces, each reflecting a distinct blend of Baroque, Aksumite and Moorish influences. The Fasilides Baths, set in a tranquil walled garden with a rectangular pool, and the Debre Berhan Selassie church — its ceiling covered with an extraordinary mural of 80 cherubic faces — complete the afternoon, leaving you well-prepared to appreciate how Ethiopia's highlands shaped a uniquely African form of Christian civilisation.
After breakfast, a 4WD vehicle drives you north from Gondar through the market town of Debark (the park headquarters, approximately 100 km, 2–3 hours), where you register permits and meet your park scout. The road climbs steeply onto the Simien plateau and you enter the national park, passing the dramatic Jinbar waterfall viewpoint before reaching the Sankaber camp at 3,300 metres. Afternoon short walk along the escarpment edge for first views of the breathtaking 1,500-metre cliffs and your first encounters with large gelada troops grazing the moorland meadows below the camp.
Today's trek (approximately 14 km, 5–6 hours walking) follows the escarpment northward from Sankaber to Geech camp at 3,600 metres, crossing open heathland studded with giant lobelia plants that can stand four metres tall and passing through hagenia woodland alive with thick-billed ravens and lammergeiers riding the thermals off the cliffs. At Imet Gogo viewpoint (3,926 m), a narrow rocky promontory juts over a sheer escarpment drop — one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Africa. Mules carry the heavy kit while you walk with a daypack, allowing full attention to the wildlife: Walia ibex and Ethiopian wolves may be sighted on cliff ledges and open ridgelines.
An early morning walk from Geech back toward the park boundary (or vehicle extraction depending on group fitness), with a final opportunity to observe gelada troops at their most active in the cool dawn light. Drive back to Debark to return permits and scout, then continue to Gondar for the afternoon flight to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. Depending on your onward international flight time, there may be opportunity for a final dinner in Addis Ababa before your departure — your guide assists with any last-minute needs.
