Mahale Chimpanzee Expedition — 5 Days

Trek habituated chimps on the white-sand shore of Lake Tanganyika — reached only by air.

Overview

Mahale Mountains National Park occupies a remote peninsula on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika — a vast inland sea that holds more fresh water than all of North America's Great Lakes combined. Here, the Mahale massif rises abruptly from white-sand beaches through miombo woodland and montane forest to peaks at 2,462 metres, forming one of the most dramatic backdrops on the continent. The only way in is by light aircraft; there are no roads, no towns, and almost no other travellers. That remoteness is the point.

The stars of Mahale are the M-group chimpanzees, a habituated community of around 60 individuals studied continuously by Japanese primatologists since 1965 — making them among the most thoroughly documented wild apes on Earth. Because chimps move freely across a vast forested range, each trek is genuinely different: some mornings the group is found grooming on the beach edge within half an hour; other days the tracker team leads you deep into cathedral-dark forest, following nests, calls and broken branches for five or six hours before the encounter materialises. Your permit is open-ended for the duration of your stay, so you have multiple chances and unlimited time with the chimps once found — a rare privilege compared with the one-hour gorilla permits of Uganda and Rwanda.

Beyond the chimpanzees, Mahale rewards patient observers with red colobus, yellow baboons, bushbuck and, in the forest canopy, a rich bird list that includes the African crowned eagle and the sought-after Ross's turaco. Evenings are spent at a beachside camp — Greystoke Mahale or Kungwe Beach Lodge — where a cold drink, a dhow sundowner on the lake, and a meal of fresh lake fish restore you after the day's exertions. The turquoise shallows of Tanganyika invite kayaking and snorkelling over cichlid-rich reefs in the afternoon light.

This five-day expedition flies from Arusha on Safari Airlink's scheduled charter service, typically routing through Kigoma. The journey itself is part of the experience — bush strips, papyrus wetlands and the first glimpse of Tanganyika from the air prime you perfectly for the days ahead. Combine Mahale with a Serengeti extension or a Gombe Stream chimpanzee visit for the ultimate Tanzania primate circuit.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

Arusha – Fly to Mahale – Afternoon on the Lake

An early morning transfer takes you to Arusha Airport for your scheduled charter flight westward across Tanzania. The routing typically touches down at Kigoma before the short final hop along the Tanganyika shoreline to Mahale's grass strip — a journey of roughly four to five hours with mesmerising aerial views of the Western Rift Valley. Your guide meets you on the beach, and after a camp orientation and lunch you are free to kayak the crystal shallows, snorkel over cichlid-crowded rocks, or simply walk the white-sand shore as red colobus monkeys crash through the palms overhead.

First Chimpanzee Trek – M-Group Encounter

After an early breakfast you join the tracker team for your first full chimpanzee trek into the Mahale forest. Trackers who have spent years with the M-group interpret knuckle prints, discarded fruit and distant pant-hoots to pinpoint the community's location, which can range from the forest edge to the upper slopes at over 1,500 metres. Once the chimps are found, you may sit quietly among them for as long as you like — watching alpha males display, juveniles play-fight, and mothers nurse infants just metres away. Return to camp for a lakeside lunch, then spend the afternoon snorkelling or resting before a sundowner dhow cruise across gilded water.

Deep Forest Trek – Bird & Primate Diversity

Today's trek takes you higher into the montane forest where the canopy thickens and the air cools. The diversity here is extraordinary: alongside the chimpanzees you may encounter olive baboons, yellow-streaked greenbuls, African crowned eagles hunting the canopy, and the vivid plumage of Ross's turaco. Because your chimp permits are open-ended, there is no pressure to rush the encounter — spend as many hours as the group's movements allow, then descend through stands of tall miombo to the beach for a late lunch. The afternoon is yours for birdwatching, swimming, or simply reading in a hammock over the sand.

    Final Trek & Lake Afternoon

Your last full morning in the forest is often the most relaxed — by now your eyes are trained, and the tracker team knows which ridge the M-group favoured at dusk. A shorter trek allows you to savour the experience without the urgency of a first encounter: watch chimps build night nests, observe complex social interactions, and listen as the forest fills with calls that echo down to the lake. Back at camp by midday, the afternoon is devoted entirely to Tanganyika — kayak as far as the rocky outcrops where Nile monitors bask, try your hand at fishing for lake perch with camp staff, or dive with a snorkel to photograph the endemic cichlids that rival any marine reef.

Morning at Camp – Fly Back to Arusha

After a final breakfast on the beach, you have a leisurely morning to pack, take last photographs of the lake at dawn, and say goodbye to the camp team before the charter aircraft collects you from the grass strip. The flight retraces the Western Rift corridor back to Kigoma and east to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon in time for onward connections, a Kilimanjaro extension, or a well-earned night in an Arusha boutique hotel. You leave Mahale with the kind of memories — the sound of chimps in the mist, the impossibly clear water — that no photographic safari can replicate.
