Mara + Nakuru + Naivasha — 6 Days

Kenya's three most-loved Rift Valley reserves in a well-paced six-day loop.

Overview

Few safari circuits in East Africa pack as much visual drama into six days as this Kenya classic. You begin in the Maasai Mara, Africa's most storied game reserve, where the great grasslands of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem roll south to the Tanzanian border in a seemingly endless golden plain. Two full days here give you the unhurried time to track the Big Five across the Mara Triangle, watch cheetahs course through the Talek River corridor, and witness the electric moment when a lion pride moves in for a kill at dawn.

From the Mara you head north and east into the Great Rift Valley, dropping into Lake Nakuru National Park — a protected sanctuary that rose to global fame for its jaw-dropping flamingo spectacles and now stands as one of Kenya's most reliable rhino sanctuaries. Alkaline waters tinted rose by cyanobacteria contrast with the acacia-yellow fever tree forest that rings the lake, creating scenery unlike anywhere else on the continent. Nakuru's fenced perimeter has allowed both black and white rhino populations to rebound, and your afternoon and morning drives here frequently deliver sightings at close quarters.

The final leg sweeps you down to Lake Naivasha, a fresh-water Rift Valley lake fed by the Malewa and Gilgil rivers and fringed by floating papyrus beds alive with kingfishers, fish eagles and African jacanas. A boat ride onto the lake brings you within metres of wallowing hippo pods, and a guided walking safari on Crescent Island — a flooded volcanic crater rim — lets you stroll freely among grazing zebras, giraffes and waterbuck on what feels like a private wildlife reserve.

Throughout the six days your expert driver-guide navigates the route in a purpose-built 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, ensuring panoramic sightlines during every game drive. Accommodation is in well-positioned mid-range lodges and tented camps chosen for their proximity to the action, so you are always among the first vehicles on the game drive roads at sunrise. The full-board arrangement means meals and logistics are handled end to end, leaving you free to focus entirely on the wildlife, the landscapes, and the extraordinary privilege of travelling through Kenya's wild heart.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Nairobi to Maasai Mara

After an early breakfast your driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel and you head southwest through the Rift Valley escarpment, dropping more than 600 metres as the city skyline gives way to vast tea estates and then open savannah. The approximately 5-hour drive (via the B3 highway through Narok) delivers you to your Mara camp in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive across the iconic Mara plains where elephant herds move through the tall red-oat grass and the first lion sightings of the trip frequently occur before sunset.

Full Day in the Maasai Mara

Rise before dawn for a game drive timed to coincide with predator activity at first light — the Mara's lion prides, leopards and cheetahs are most active in the cool hours. Your driver-guide reads the landscape expertly, positioning the vehicle for close, unhurried encounters with the Big Five and the resident wildebeest and zebra herds that populate the reserve year-round. A packed bush lunch lets you remain in the park through the heat of the day when elephant and buffalo concentrate around the Mara and Talek rivers, before an evening drive back to camp beneath a dramatically wide Kenyan sky.

Morning Game Drive, then Transfer to Lake Nakuru

One final sunrise game drive in the Mara captures the reserve at its most atmospheric before you load up and head north towards Lake Nakuru National Park — a drive of roughly 3.5 hours through the rolling Mau Escarpment and the agricultural towns of Narok and Nakuru town. You arrive at Nakuru in the afternoon, check in to your lakeside lodge, and head straight out on an evening game drive that often rewards with rhino sightings and the vivid flamingo-pink fringe of the alkaline lake reflecting the last light of day.

Lake Nakuru National Park — Rhinos, Flamingos and Waterbuck

A full morning inside Nakuru's fenced sanctuary focuses on the park's remarkable rhino recovery story — both black and white rhino are regularly spotted along the western lakeshore circuit and in the yellow fever tree woodlands below Baboon Cliff. The elevated viewpoint at Baboon Cliff delivers a sweeping panorama over the soda lake, often tinged pink and white by thousands of lesser and greater flamingos feeding in the shallows. Lions and leopards are also resident within the park, and Rothschild giraffes — one of Kenya's most endangered subspecies — can be seen browsing the tall yellow-barked acacias throughout the day.

Lake Naivasha — Boat Safari and Crescent Island Walk

After an early breakfast you drive the short distance south to Lake Naivasha, descending to the floor of the Rift Valley and the freshwater lake that sits at roughly 1,880 metres above sea level. A morning boat ride weaves between floating papyrus islands where African fish eagles perch and pods of hippos surface mere metres from the bow. In the afternoon a guided walking safari on Crescent Island — a flooded caldera in the eastern bay — brings you face to face with giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and Thomson's gazelles with no vehicle barrier between you and the animals, a uniquely intimate African wildlife experience.

    Naivasha to Nairobi — Departure

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast beside the lake before loading the vehicle for the approximately 1.5-hour scenic drive back to Nairobi along the main Naivasha-Nairobi highway, passing the dramatic escarpment viewpoint at the top of the Rift Valley where Kenya's geological story is laid bare in layers of rock and volcanic debris. Your driver-guide drops you at your Nairobi hotel, the airport, or a connecting onward transfer at a time that suits your departure schedule, concluding a safari that has taken you through three of Kenya's most iconic wild landscapes in just six days.
