Kenya's wildlife story is written in contrasts, and no itinerary captures that duality better than pairing Samburu National Reserve with the Maasai Mara. This seven-day journey sweeps you from the sun-scorched semi-arid north to the golden, lion-haunted grasslands of the south — two ecosystems separated by barely four hundred kilometres yet worlds apart in character, colour and cast of wildlife.
Samburu National Reserve occupies a dramatic bend of the Ewaso Ng'iro River in Kenya's Northern Frontier District, where doum palms throw slim shadows across red laterite earth and dry riverbeds erupt in sudden green. This is the home of the celebrated "Special Five" — species found nowhere else on a standard Kenyan circuit: reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, gerenuk (the long-necked antelope that browses standing upright on its hind legs), and Beisa oryx. Elephants wade the river at midday, leopards drape themselves over acacia branches at dusk, and large prides of lion patrol the sandy luggas after dark. Birdlife is extraordinary, with Vulturine guineafowl, Lilac-breasted roller and Martial eagle reliably spotted.
After a short return to Nairobi — a city that itself brushes the edge of a national park — the safari pivots south to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya's most iconic protected area and the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem. Here the horizon flattens into a seemingly endless sea of red oat grass broken by acacia woodlands along the Mara and Talek rivers. The Mara is renowned for harbouring some of Africa's densest lion populations, thriving cheetah clans, secretive leopards, and both black and white rhinoceros. From July through October the world-famous Great Wildebeest Migration surges across the Mara River in thundering, crocodile-watched crossings, but even in the quieter months resident herds of buffalo, elephant, topi, and impala ensure the plains are never empty.
Throughout the safari you travel in a dedicated 4×4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof hatch — the standard that lets you stand for unobstructed 360-degree views during game drives. Your safari begins with an early-morning scheduled or light-aircraft charter flight from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, trading the city skyline for the rust-red plains of Kenya's Northern Frontier within the hour. Your driver-guide meets you at Samburu's airstrip and transfers you to your tented camp perched on the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro River. After a settling-in lunch, an afternoon game drive introduces the reserve's signature Special Five — keep your eyes peeled for reticulated giraffe drinking at the riverbank and gerenuk browsing impossibly upright among the acacias. Return to camp for a sundowner as elephants cross the river in golden light.
Rise before dawn for a game drive through the rolling luggas (dry riverbeds) that serve as lion highways after a cool night. Samburu's riverine forest is one of the best places in Kenya to spot leopard, often seen reclining on a favourite branch above the water. Mid-morning returns you to camp for breakfast and a restful midday break — essential in the northern heat. The late-afternoon drive sweeps the open flats for Grevy's zebra and Beisa oryx before the Ewaso Ng'iro turns copper at sunset; crocodiles slide silently into the shallows, and a Nile monitor may stalk the papyrus margin just metres from the vehicle.
An early morning game drive captures the reserve at its freshest — lions returning from a night hunt, elephants moving to water — before a mid-morning transfer to the airstrip for your return flight to Wilson Airport. Your guide meets you in Nairobi, handles luggage logistics, and escorts you to a comfortable city hotel for the night. The afternoon is free: Nairobi's Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Centre or the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage all lie within twenty minutes of the main hotel belt and make for a rewarding optional excursion.
After breakfast your driver-guide collects you for the overland journey southwest towards the Maasai Mara, roughly five to six hours through the Rift Valley escarpment and the rolling Maasai rangelands. The road itself is part of the experience: look out for Maasai herders in red shukas, acacia-dotted plains and, on a clear day, the distant flash of Lake Naivasha. You enter the reserve in the late afternoon, ideally timed for a short game drive en route to your camp — the open Musiara or Olare Orok grasslands often yield cheetah and large elephant herds on this first crossing of the plains.
A full day in the Mara means two extended game drives flanking a leisurely camp lunch. The morning drive ventures to the Mara River corridor — Africa's most famous crossing point during the Great Migration — where resident hippo pods and Nile crocodiles keep vigil year-round. Lion prides are almost a certainty on Mara's open plains; cheetah coalitions hunt the short-grass areas near the Talek River, and leopards haunt the croton thickets along watercourses. In the afternoon your guide sweeps the Musiara swamp edges for buffalo herds and the rarer black rhino, then positions the vehicle for the long, light-drenched moments of the African sunset.
Your last full day in the wild begins at first light with a pre-breakfast game drive into the heart of the reserve — early morning is prime hunting time for the Mara's celebrated lion prides, and cheetah are frequently spotted stretching on termite mounds before the heat builds. After a leisurely camp brunch you have the option of a guided bush walk with a Maasai ranger (where offered by your camp) or a relaxed afternoon drive through the Oloololo escarpment area, where forest edge meets open plain and elephant families browse in the long shade. A final sunset game drive closes the safari chapter in style.
One last sunrise breakfast in the Mara before striking camp and making the overland drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the early afternoon. Your driver-guide drops you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or your Nairobi hotel, where the safari ends with memories of reticulated giraffe silhouettes on a northern skyline and lion cubs tumbling across Mara grass in the morning gold.
