Alpine rock: summit the true peaks of Mt Kenya — Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m).
Standing at the heart of Kenya's equatorial highlands, Mount Kenya is Africa's second-highest massif and one of the continent's most dramatic alpine landscapes. Unlike the snow-domed walk-up routes of Kilimanjaro, Mt Kenya's twin summits — Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m) — are vertical granite spires sculpted by ancient glaciers, accessible only to climbers with genuine multi-pitch rock skills. This is the route that drew Halford Mackinder in 1899 on the first ascent, and it remains one of the finest technical alpine objectives in Africa.
Our 8-day programme is built around three deliberate acclimatisation days on the Sirimon Route, the cleanest and least-crowded approach on the mountain's north-west flank. You'll ascend through zones of giant heather, otherworldly giant groundsels and lobelias of the afro-alpine moorland, passing through the Liki North Valley and up to Shipton's Camp (4,200 m) beneath the towering north face of Batian. These days are not idle waiting — they sharpen your cardio, sharpen your focus, and fill your lungs with the rare, cold air of the high equatorial Andes of Africa.
The technical climb follows the Normal Route on Nelion's south-east face — a classic multi-pitch line at UIAA IV+ / V- (5.6 YDS) involving some 13 rope pitches of exposed granite climbing above Kami Hut (4,985 m). Your UIAA-certified mountain guide leads every pitch on fixed ropes, placing protection and coaching technique. A bivouac in the cramped but legendary Howell Hut perched atop Nelion's summit gives you a jaw-dropping sunset across the Lewis Glacier and a window of pre-dawn stillness before the final move.
At first light, a short but airy traverse of the Gate of the Mists — the ice-filled couloir linking Nelion and Batian — brings you to the true high point of Kenya at 5,199 m. The 360-degree panorama stretches to the Aberdare Range to the west, the Laikipia Plateau to the north, and on clear mornings all the way to Kilimanjaro far to the south. After photographs and the moment of a lifetime, you rappel the route, descend to Shipton's and begin the long, satisfied walk back to Nairobi.

After a pre-dawn breakfast in Nairobi you head north through the Central Highlands, the road climbing past the market town of Nanyuki (around 1,950 m) with Mt Kenya's glaciated peaks already commanding the horizon. You check in at Sirimon Gate (2,650 m), complete park formalities, meet your guide team and shoulder your packs for a three-hour introductory walk through dense cedar-podocarpus forest to the first night's moorland camp. Buffalo and elephant are common along this lower corridor, and the cold, clean air signals the altitude change immediately.
Today you descend into the Liki North Valley, one of the most scenic glacially-carved glens on the mountain, before contouring up to Shipton's Camp (4,200 m) beneath the dramatic north face of Batian and Nelion. The trail winds through the afro-alpine zone where giant groundsels (Senecio keniodendron) and giant lobelias grow to head height in a landscape that feels prehistoric. Your guide sets a measured pace — the acclimatisation protocol is strict — and the afternoon is free for rest, gear checks and a briefing on the technical sections ahead.
A classic acclimatisation day: hike high, sleep low. You climb from Shipton's across the rocky moraine to Kami Hut (4,985 m), the staging post for the technical climb, studying the Normal Route's line on Nelion's south-east face from below and identifying key landmarks. From the hut you push to the snout of the Lewis Glacier for a close-up of the retreating ice, then descend back to Shipton's in the afternoon. The extra altitude exposure today is the most important physiological investment you can make before summit day.
A shorter carry day allows you to relocate from Shipton's up to Kami Hut (4,985 m) with all technical climbing equipment, arriving with plenty of daylight for a thorough gear inspection, harness fitting and rope-management briefing with your lead guide. The afternoon is spent studying the first pitches from the hut doorstep, identifying the start of the route on the south-east ridge and running through communication signals and emergency procedures. An early dinner and a strict lights-out ensure the 3 a.m. start tomorrow is not a shock.
You leave Kami Hut by headtorch at 3 a.m. and reach the base of the Normal Route as the first grey light seeps across the Laikipia Plateau below. The climb unfolds over roughly 13 pitches of exposed granite — slabs, cracks, a short chimney and the superb upper arete — your guide leading and fixing protection on every pitch. By mid-afternoon, weather permitting, you stand on the summit of Nelion (5,188 m) with all of Kenya visible beneath you. You spend the night in the Howell Hut, a tiny metal refuge bolted to the summit, watching the sun set over the Lewis and Tyndall Glaciers in one of the rarest bivouac settings in Africa.
A 5 a.m. start takes you from Howell Hut across the ice-filled Gate of the Mists couloir to the final pitches leading to Batian (5,199 m) — the highest point in Kenya and the second-highest peak in Africa. Summit photographs, 360-degree views and the weight of the achievement are savoured before you begin the full rappel descent back down Nelion's Normal Route to Kami Hut. From Kami you pick up gear cached the day before and make the final descent to Shipton's Camp on tired but jubilant legs, arriving in time for a hot meal and the luxury of a tent after the summit bivouac.
The long walk out follows the Sirimon Route in reverse, dropping from the high moorland back through the giant heather belt and into the cedar-podocarpus forest, a descent of nearly 1,600 metres that takes four to five hours. The knees feel the gradient but the mood is celebratory — summit stories are traded over a packed lunch on the moorland before the final forest section brings you out at Sirimon Gate. Your vehicle meets you for the drive back to Nanyuki or directly to Nairobi, arriving by early evening.
After breakfast at the hotel you are transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or your onward Nairobi connection at the time agreed with your guide. There is no mountain programme today, but there is time — if your flight is late afternoon or evening — for a quick visit to the Nairobi National Museum, the Giraffe Centre or the Karen Blixen Museum before heading to the terminal.
