The Burguret Route is Mt Kenya's best-kept secret — a wild, rarely-walked western approach that earns its reputation among seasoned trekkers who crave solitude over foot-traffic. Beginning at Burguret Gate near Naro Moru at around 2,600 metres, the trail plunges immediately into cathedral-like stands of old-growth Kenyan cedar and giant podocarpus, their trunks draped in lichen and Spanish moss, the forest floor alive with the trumpet calls of Hartlaub's turacos and the distant crack of elephant moving through the undergrowth.
This is classic montane forest at its most unbroken. Buffalo, elephant, and the mythical mountain bongo — one of Africa's rarest and most secretive antelopes — all make their home in these lower slopes. A licensed, armed forest ranger escorts the group through the forest section, ensuring both safety and an unparalleled wildlife-tracking experience you will not find on the busier Sirimon or Naro Moru routes. By the end of Day 1 you emerge at Highland Castle around 3,000 metres, the trees thinning and the great moorland opening ahead of you in every direction.
Days two and three carry you up through Afro-alpine heath, past giant groundsel and lobelia that look like something from another planet, crossing the high Hausberg Col beneath the sheer rock faces of Batian (5,199 m) and Nelion (5,188 m) — Kenya's two highest peaks. Two Tarn Hut at 4,490 metres sits at the heart of the mountain's western cwm, its twin glacial tarns reflecting the summit towers on still mornings, the air sharp and crystalline above the clouds.
The pre-dawn summit push to Point Lenana (4,985 m) — Mt Kenya's third-highest peak and the highest attainable by non-technical trekkers — rewards those who rise at midnight with a sunrise above the clouds and a 360-degree panorama stretching from the Aberdare Range in the west to the plains of Laikipia in the north and, on clear days, the faint shimmer of Kilimanjaro far to the south. The descent follows the popular Sirimon corridor through Shipton's Camp and Old Moses Camp, a welcome change of scenery as the mountain releases you gently back into the green foothills of Laikipia.
This five-day circuit packs extraordinary ecological diversity into a compact adventure: tropical forest, giant heath, Afro-alpine moorland, glacial tarns, and a genuine summit experience. It is graded challenging — both for the altitude and the remoteness of the Burguret ascent — and is best suited to trekkers with a reasonable baseline fitness and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. Acclimatisation is built into the itinerary with a deliberate high-low-high profile, and your experienced mountain guide and cook ensure comfort and safety at every camp.

An early morning departure from Nairobi heads north through Nyeri and Naro Moru, arriving at Burguret Gate (approx. 2,600 m) where your armed forest ranger joins the team and park formalities are completed. The afternoon trek leads immediately into dense old-growth cedar and podocarpus forest — expect to cross muddy elephant paths, hear the bark of bushbuck in the understorey, and scan the canopy for the brilliant crimson-and-green of Hartlaub's turacos. A steady 3–4 hour climb through increasingly spectacular forest brings you to Highland Castle camp (approx. 3,000 m) in time to dry boots by the cook fire and watch the mist pour in as the sun drops behind the Aberdares.
Today is the most dramatic and demanding day of the climb, gaining roughly 1,490 metres of altitude as the trail leaves the last trees and enters the open Afro-alpine moorland. Giant groundsel (Dendrosenecio keniodendron) and towering lobelia line the path as it rises steeply toward Hausberg Col (approx. 4,350 m), a windswept saddle that opens up a sudden and breathtaking view of Batian and Nelion's rock faces filling the skyline. The descent from the col to Two Tarn Hut (4,490 m) is relatively short but the altitude demands a slow and deliberate pace — you will rest here for the remainder of the afternoon, hydrating and acclimatising before the pre-dawn summit push.
A midnight wake-up call, hot tea in hand, marks the start of the summit push under a dome of equatorial stars. The 3–4 hour ascent to Point Lenana (4,985 m) is steep and rocky, best done in crampons in the early months, and is timed to arrive at the summit trig point precisely as the first light turns the horizon amber and rose above a sea of clouds. After photographs and a moment to absorb the extraordinary panorama, the descent heads northeast toward the Lewis Glacier remnant and drops to Shipton's Camp (4,200 m) on the Mackinder Valley floor — a complete change of scenery from the western cwm, with the dramatic Northeast Face of Batian rising sheer above the camp.
A well-earned rest-day morning at Shipton's allows muscles and lungs to recover before the descent begins in earnest along the broad and scenic Sirimon track. The trail passes through classic Afro-alpine heath — masses of heather in bloom, patches of everlasting flowers, and the occasional rock hyrax sunning on a boulder — before the vegetation thickens back into upper montane forest as you drop to Old Moses Camp (3,300 m). Buffalo and elephant are regularly encountered in the zone between moorland and forest here, making for an alert and rewarding final afternoon in the park.
A final morning walk descends through fragrant cedar and olive forest to Sirimon Gate where the vehicle awaits. After completing park exit formalities you depart north of the mountain for the 3–4 hour drive back to Nairobi, with a lunch stop in Nanyuki — a lively market town at the equator line where you can browse curios or pick up cold drinks before the highway south. Depending on traffic, you can expect arrival back in Nairobi city centre by late afternoon.
