Mountain & Summit Trekking · 4 days / 3 nights
Mt Kenya's most scenic flank — Lake Michaelson, Gorges Valley, and vertical cliffs.
The Chogoria route is widely regarded as the most beautiful approach to the summit zone of Mount Kenya, Africa's second-highest peak and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ascending from the east through dense Afromontane forest alive with Sykes' monkeys, buffalo, and the occasional elephant, the trail climbs steadily onto open moorland before revealing one of the mountain's great spectacles: the Gorges Valley, a sheer volcanic amphitheatre whose 300-metre cliffs enclose the vivid turquoise waters of Lake Michaelson at around 4,050 metres. Few images in East African trekking are as arresting as this one.
This four-day round-trip itinerary ascends and descends on the same eastern flank, taking trekkers from the Chogoria gate at roughly 2,950 metres through a classic sequence of ecological zones — rainforest, bamboo belt, giant heather, and open afroalpine moorland dotted with giant groundsel (Senecio keniodendron) and lobelia. The eastern moorland is far less trafficked than the popular Sirimon or Naro Moru corridors, giving a genuine sense of wilderness and solitude that more famous African trekking destinations struggle to match.
The goal is Point Lenana (4,985 m), the trekking summit of Mount Kenya and the third-highest point on the continent accessible without technical climbing equipment. The ascent is timed as an early alpine start from Mintos Camp, so trekkers arrive at the summit at sunrise — a dawn panorama of Batian and Nelion peaks catching the first light, the Lewis Glacier below, and on clear mornings a view stretching west to the Aberdares and east toward the Nyambene Hills.
All logistics are fully managed: round-trip transport from Nairobi, an experienced mountain guide, a dedicated cook, and a porter team carry camping and kitchen equipment so you trek with a light daypack. This is an ideal introduction to high-altitude trekking in East Africa for fit walkers with no prior mountaineering experience, and a deeply rewarding objective for those returning to Kenya who want something beyond the savannah.
Route: Nairobi → Chogoria Gate (2,950 m) → Meru Mt Kenya Bandas → Mintos Camp (4,300 m) → Point Lenana → Mintos → Chogoria → Nairobi
An early morning departure from Nairobi heads north-east through Embu and Meru, skirting the foothills of Mount Kenya before turning onto the forest track that leads to Chogoria gate (2,950 m), approximately five hours' drive. After completing park registration and meeting your guide and porter team, the afternoon trek begins through dense Afromontane rainforest — a canopy loud with Hartlaub's turacos and crowned hornbills — arriving at the Kenya Forest Service Meru Mount Kenya Bandas by late afternoon. The bandas sit at around 3,000 metres inside the forest boundary and serve as a gentle first acclimatisation night.
Today is the scenic heart of the route. The trail climbs out of the forest into the bamboo zone and then the open heather moorland, where giant groundsel and lobelia begin to appear in extraordinary numbers. By mid-morning the path skirts the rim of the Gorges Valley, whose vertical lava cliffs drop away dramatically to reveal Lake Michaelson shimmering 300 metres below — one of the finest viewpoints on any African mountain. The route continues above the lake toward Temple (Lake Ellis area) and then along the upper moorland, reaching Mintos Camp (4,300 m) in the early afternoon. Pace is deliberately slow to support acclimatisation; a short acclimatisation walk around camp in the late afternoon helps the body adjust before tomorrow's summit bid.
A pre-dawn alpine start, typically between 03:00 and 04:00, gives trekkers the best chance of clear skies and a sunrise arrival at Point Lenana (4,985 m). The ascent follows the south-west ridge in the dark, headtorches illuminating the scree and frozen tussocks, with the silhouette of Batian and Nelion growing overhead. At the summit, on a clear morning, the Lewis Glacier glows pink and the vast Kenyan highland plateau stretches in every direction — a genuinely moving reward for the effort. After photographs and a moment to absorb the scale, the descent retraces the route to Mintos Camp for a late breakfast and a well-earned rest; the remainder of the afternoon is free for journaling, birdwatching on the moorland, or simply recuperating.
After breakfast the route descends back through the moorland, past the Gorges Valley viewpoint one final time, and drops through the heather and bamboo into the rainforest, reaching Chogoria gate by mid-morning. The drive back to Nairobi follows, arriving in the city by early-to-mid evening depending on traffic — a satisfying end to four days on one of Africa's most beautiful mountain flanks.
