Overview

The Naro Moru Direttissima is Africa's most direct assault on Point Lenana — the trekking summit of Mount Kenya at 4,985 metres — and for acclimatised adventurers with limited time, it is simply the finest three-day mountain experience on the continent. Rising sharply from the equatorial forest belt at the Naro Moru Gate to the glaciated high moorland in a single bold push, this route wastes nothing and rewards everything: raw altitude, dramatic vertical relief, and the quiet exhilaration of standing on a snow-dusted equatorial peak at sunrise.

Day one climbs through a dripping montane forest alive with Colobus monkeys and sunbirds before the trees give way to heather moorland and the first views of Batian and Nelion — Kenya's two true technical peaks — framed against an impossibly blue sky. The trail then enters the infamous Vertical Bog, a relentlessly steep section of saturated moorland that has tested every trekker who has attempted this route. It is demanding but manageable, and arriving at the warm refuge of Met Station huts at 3,050 metres feels like a genuine achievement.

Day two is the centrepiece of the Direttissima experience. A long, sustained ascent through the otherworldly Afro-alpine zone carries you past giant groundsel trees, lobelia spires, and glassy tarns before depositing you at Mackinder's Camp in the heart of the Teleki Valley at 4,200 metres. The valley is flanked by towering rock faces scarred by retreating glaciers — a vivid reminder of climate change playing out in real time on the equator. Rest is essential here; the altitude is serious and the pre-dawn summit push begins just hours after arriving.

The summit attempt departs before 3 a.m. to catch sunrise from the top of Africa's second-highest mountain. The headlamp ascent via the Austrian Hut scree slopes is steep and cold, but as the eastern sky ignites behind the Aberdare Range and the shadow of Mount Kenya stretches across the Laikipia Plateau far below, every laboured step is repaid in full. Point Lenana's rock cairn and summit cross mark a memory that will stay with you for life. The return descent to Naro Moru Gate that same day is long but triumphant, and a late afternoon drive returns you to Nairobi with an extraordinary story to tell.

Nairobi to Met Station — Into the Vertical Bog

Depart Nairobi early in a 4x4 vehicle, crossing the equator on the A2 highway before arriving at the Naro Moru Gate (2,400 m) to complete park registration and meet your mountain crew. The afternoon climb moves swiftly through mist-laced montane forest — watch for Black-and-white Colobus monkeys overhead and giant fig trees draped in lichen — before the trail steepens dramatically into the notorious Vertical Bog, a saturated moorland gradient that gives the Direttissima its reputation for no-nonsense altitude gain. Reach the Met Station huts at 3,050 metres as dusk settles over the moorland, enjoy a hot three-course dinner, and rest well — tomorrow begins the most spectacular section of the route.

Met Station to Mackinder's Camp — The Teleki Valley

Rise to a cooked breakfast with the peaks of Batian and Nelion glowing pink in the early light, then set off up the upper moorland into the Afro-alpine zone — one of the rarest and most visually extraordinary ecosystems on earth, where giant groundsel trees and six-foot lobelia spires emerge from the mist like prehistoric sentinels. The trail curves into the Teleki Valley and the scale of Mount Kenya's central massif becomes overwhelming, with rock walls and shrinking glaciers towering above the valley floor. Arrive at Mackinder's Camp (4,200 m) by early afternoon, allowing maximum time to rest, hydrate, and acclimatise before your 2:30 a.m. wake-up call for the summit push.

Summit Point Lenana at Dawn — Return to Nairobi

Well before first light your guide wakes you for a pre-dawn start, and by headlamp you navigate the scree slopes above Austrian Hut and pick your way up to Point Lenana (4,985 m) just as the Indian Ocean horizon blazes orange — the shadow of Mount Kenya stretching hundreds of kilometres across the Laikipia Plateau is an image you will never forget. After photographs at the summit cross and cairn, descend carefully through the Vertical Bog and forest sections, passing terrain that looks entirely different in daylight, to reach Naro Moru Gate by mid-afternoon. Your waiting 4x4 returns you to Nairobi in time for a celebratory dinner in town.
