This five-day Uganda circuit delivers two of East Africa's most dramatic water experiences back to back: the legendary Source of the Nile at Jinja and the thunderous cascade of Murchison Falls — where the entire volume of the world's longest river is forced through a seven-metre gorge with a roar you feel in your chest. It is a journey that blends adrenaline with wilderness, the ancient with the untamed, and the human history of the Nile with one of Uganda's great wildlife spectacles.

You begin at Jinja, the lakeside town on the northern shore of Lake Victoria where 19th-century explorers first confirmed that this shimmering expanse feeds the White Nile. A gentle afternoon at the Source sets the mood — the current wells up calmly here, belying the turbulence that awaits downstream. Optional white-water rafting on Grade IV-V rapids puts you directly in that current and is one of East Africa's most celebrated adventure activities, available as an add-on for the adventurous.

From Jinja the journey pushes north and west through the Ugandan interior, crossing the Nile at Karuma Falls before descending into Murchison Falls National Park — Uganda's largest protected area at nearly four thousand square kilometres. The park straddles both banks of the Nile and shelters one of Africa's densest concentrations of hippos and Nile crocodiles along with large herds of Uganda kob, Rothschild's giraffe (one of the world's rarest), buffalo, elephant, and lion. The open savannah north of the Nile contrasts vividly with the dense riparian forest that lines the river's banks.

The centrepiece is Murchison Falls itself. A classic Nile launch cruise from Paraa brings you upstream past hippo pools teeming with pod after pod, crocodiles warming on sandbars, and waterbirds including the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork if luck is on your side, before the falls come into view — a white wall of fury framed by green forest. A short hike to the top of the falls reveals the extraordinary geological squeeze and a rainbow mist that hangs in the air on sunny mornings. Game drives on the northern bank add lion, leopard, and those iconic giraffes striding across the golden grasslands at dawn.

Throughout, you are accommodated in comfortable lodges and tented camps that place you close to the wildlife and the sounds of the African night, while your expert driver-guide handles all logistics so you can concentrate entirely on the experience. The return leg south to Entebbe via Kampala completes a satisfying loop through the Pearl of Africa.

Entebbe to Jinja — Source of the Nile

Your guide collects you from Entebbe or Kampala in the early morning and the drive east follows the northern shore of Lake Victoria through market towns and banana plantations, arriving in Jinja by mid-morning. After checking in at your lakeside lodge, you visit the Source of the Nile viewpoint where the White Nile begins its 6,700-kilometre journey to the Mediterranean — a curiously serene spot given the epic drama downstream. The afternoon is free to explore Jinja town, browse the craft market, or simply watch the river form from the papyrus-fringed shore. For those who want more action, an optional white-water rafting excursion on the Grade IV-V Nile rapids runs most of the afternoon and is widely regarded as one of the best one-day rafting runs in the world.

Jinja to Murchison Falls National Park

An early breakfast precedes a long but rewarding drive north and west toward Murchison Falls National Park — approximately five to six hours with a comfort stop. The road crosses the Nile at the spectacular Karuma Falls, a fitting preview of the river's character, and passes through the rolling farmland and forest of northern Uganda before the vegetation thins to classic savannah as you approach the park boundary. You enter the park and make your way to Paraa, crossing the Nile by the Paraa ferry — a short ride that already delivers your first hippos and crocodiles lounging on the banks. Settle into your lodge in time for an evening game drive or simply relax on the terrace watching elephants move through the riverine bush as the sun drops behind the escarpment.

Murchison Falls — Launch Cruise & Game Drive

Rise before dawn for a morning game drive on the open savannah north of the Nile, where Uganda kob and Rothschild's giraffe are often seen in the golden early light and lions may still be on a kill from the night. After breakfast, board a launch at Paraa for the classic Nile cruise upstream toward the base of Murchison Falls — two to three hours drifting past sandbanks packed with hippos and Nile crocodiles, with shoebill stork, African fish eagle, and a wealth of other waterbirds along the papyrus margins. The falls themselves appear around a final bend: the Victoria Nile funnelling through a rock cleft just seven metres wide before exploding forty-three metres into a churning plunge pool, spray rising into a permanent rainbow. A short trail climbs to the top of the falls for the full geological drama, then you return downstream for lunch before a leisurely afternoon drive back through the park.

Murchison Falls — Full-Day Northern Bank Safari

A full day dedicated to Murchison's famous northern bank game circuit, which offers some of Uganda's finest big-game viewing on open, rolling grassland cut by seasonal streams and dotted with borassus palms. Your guide covers the Delta loop near the river mouth and the broader savannah tracks where elephant herds are regularly encountered, and lion prides patrol territories alongside leopard, spotted hyena, and large buffalo herds. Lunch is taken in the field or back at camp, and an afternoon drive targets the fading light when predators become most active. An optional evening guided walk along the river with a UWA ranger gives a completely different perspective on the park's ecology and birdlife.

Murchison Falls to Entebbe — Journey South

After a final bush breakfast, board the Paraa ferry for the last time and begin the long drive south to Entebbe, retracing the road through Karuma and down through the Ugandan countryside. The journey takes approximately five to six hours and your guide will stop at points of interest along the way, including the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary if timing allows — Uganda's only place to track white rhino on foot. Guests are dropped at Entebbe International Airport or at Kampala hotels in the early evening, completing a circuit that has encompassed the river, the falls, the savannah, and the very source of the Nile.
