Tanzania's flagship circuit: Crater Big Five + endless Serengeti plains.
Northern Tanzania distils East Africa's safari legend into one sweeping arc of landscapes: acacia-dotted savannah, ancient volcanic calderas, and the boundless golden plains of the Serengeti. This six-day circuit follows the classic northern route — Arusha to Tarangire, up to the Ngorongoro Highlands, and then deep into the Serengeti — delivering the full theatre of African wildlife in a single, unhurried journey.
The adventure opens in Tarangire National Park, a park often bypassed by shorter itineraries yet brimming with character. The Tarangire River acts as a dry-season magnet, drawing some of the largest elephant concentrations in Africa alongside fringe-eared oryx, greater kudu, and vast flocks of migratory birds. Ancient baobab trees, some more than a thousand years old, dot the landscape and give Tarangire a prehistoric grandeur found nowhere else on the circuit.
The Ngorongoro Crater needs little introduction — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Descending 600 metres into the caldera's floor, you enter a self-contained ecosystem of roughly 25,000 large mammals, including resident lion prides, black rhino (one of the last viable populations in Tanzania), hippo pools, and enormous bull elephants whose tusks nearly graze the ground. With the crater walls forming a natural enclosure, Big Five sightings in a single morning are genuinely routine here.
Three nights in the Serengeti anchor the itinerary, allowing morning and afternoon game drives across different zones — the short-grass plains of the south, the kopje-studded central Seronera valley, and the river-braided corridors of the north. Between July and October the wildebeest migration sweeps northward; drama peaks at the Grumeti and Mara Rivers where crocodiles lie in wait and wildebeest leap into churning water in one of nature's most extraordinary spectacles. Outside peak migration months the Serengeti remains exceptional, with resident predators — lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog — providing year-round action.

After a morning briefing at your Arusha hotel, your driver-guide loads the Land Cruiser and you head south-west through the fertile farmland of the Monduli Highlands before dropping onto the Tarangire plains in time for an afternoon game drive. The Tarangire River corridor is legendary for its elephant herds — it is not unusual to encounter 200 or more elephants in a single drive — and the twisted silhouettes of ancient baobabs make every photograph feel iconic. Keep your eyes on the treetops for reticulated giraffe and martial eagle, and scan the riverbanks for the resident hippo and crocodile populations. Dinner and overnight at your lodge on the park boundary.
A full day in Tarangire allows you to explore the park's diverse habitats well beyond the river zone — the mixed woodland shelters lesser kudu and gerenuk, while the open grasslands host cheetah and a remarkable diversity of raptors. An early morning drive departs just after sunrise to catch predators while they are still active, followed by a packed picnic lunch in the bush beside one of the park's seasonal swamps. In the afternoon you can return to the river for golden-hour elephant crossings that are simply unmissable. This extended stay separates a serious safari from a fleeting one.
Leaving the Tarangire plains, the road climbs steadily through Maasai pasturelands and montane forest into the cool Ngorongoro Highlands, where the altitude hovers around 2,300 metres and the air carries a hint of cedar. You arrive at the crater rim in the afternoon with time to walk to the viewpoint and absorb the sheer scale of the caldera stretching below — 19 kilometres across and carpeted with an ecosystem that has evolved in relative isolation for half a million years. Sundowner drinks on the rim with the crater floor glowing copper in the evening light is a memory that stays with travellers long after the trip ends.
An early start is essential — you descend the steep crater wall as the morning mist lifts off the floor, revealing a scene straight from prehistory. The crater supports a permanent population of black rhino, and your guide knows the territory well enough to track them patiently. Lion prides lounge on the open soda flats, herds of Cape buffalo number in the thousands, and the Lerai Forest hides leopard and a wealth of birdlife. By midday you picnic at the Ngoitoktok Hippo Pool, watching hippos jostle and Egyptian geese parade along the bank, before completing a full loop of the floor and ascending to the rim for the drive onward to the Serengeti.
Waking up inside Serengeti National Park, one of the world's largest and most celebrated wildlife reserves, is a singular feeling — the horizon stretches unbroken in every direction and the air fills with birdsong and distant wildebeest calls. Morning and afternoon game drives cover the central Seronera Valley, where the Seronera River sustains a resident population of leopard, lion and cheetah year-round, and the famous Seronera kopjes provide perfect lion-lazing perches. In migration season the plains ripple with wildebeest columns stretching to the horizon; outside migration months, newborn calves in February–March or resident predator activity keeps the drama constantly high. Your guide reads the landscape expertly, positioning the vehicle for the best light and the closest ethical approach.
A final dawn game drive captures the Serengeti at its most atmospheric — the low amber light, dew still on the grass, and predators completing their overnight hunts. After breakfast at the lodge you begin the drive back toward the Ngorongoro gate and down through the highlands, arriving in Arusha in the late afternoon. Transfers are timed to connect with evening flights, or you can extend your stay in Arusha and explore the vibrant local craft markets and coffee plantations of the Arusha region the following day.
