Overview

North of Mount Kenya, beyond the last tarmac and the last reliable rains, the landscape opens into something ancient and almost entirely unhurried. Samburu, Buffalo Springs, and Shaba National Reserves share the amber thread of the Ewaso Ng'iro River — a permanent lifeline in an otherwise semi-arid world of doum palms, acacia scrub, and sun-scorched red laterite plains. This five-day circuit covers all three reserves in a single seamless journey, giving you the depth of immersion that a single reserve cannot match.

The northern frontier is the only place in Kenya where you can reliably see all five members of the celebrated 'Samburu Special Five' — reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and the long-necked gerenuk — browsing upright on its hind legs against a backdrop of volcanic kopjes. Elephant herds cross the Ewaso Ng'iro daily, leopard are unusually confiding here, and the river's sand banks host crocodile and hippo alongside hypnotic flocks of carmine bee-eaters in the right season.

Buffalo Springs, separated from Samburu only by the river, offers a subtly different savannah character — broader flood plains and more open sightlines that reward patient game-viewers with cheetah encounters and vast gatherings of dry-season grazers. Shaba, to the east, is the wildest and least visited of the trio: a rugged mosaic of lava outcrops, seasonal luggas, and pristine doum-palm riverine forest where George and Joy Adamson released Penny the leopard and where the silence at dusk is extraordinary.

Camps and lodges in this region sit directly on or within metres of the Ewaso Ng'iro, so the river is never far — whether as a dramatic backdrop at sundowner time, a source of early-morning elephant sightings from your tent veranda, or the reason a lion patrols the opposite bank each night. Drives are unhurried, game densities are high, and northern Kenya's famously warm and dry climate means comfortable conditions year-round. Nairobi to Samburu — Arrival and First Game Drive

Depart Nairobi early morning, heading north on the A2 highway through the fertile highlands of Nanyuki before the road descends dramatically into the dry lowlands beyond Isiolo. The drive takes approximately five to six hours and the landscape transformation is striking — from green wheat fields to bleached acacia savannah and red dust roads. Arrive at your riverside lodge in time for lunch, and set out on a late-afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro where reticulated giraffe, elephant, and the first of the Samburu Special Five are almost guaranteed before sundowners.

Full Day in Samburu National Reserve

A full dawn-to-dusk day entirely inside Samburu National Reserve, one of Kenya's most productive game circuits. Morning drives follow the river's north bank where elephant families wade across at favourite crossing points and leopard are regularly spotted resting in the forks of acacia trees. The afternoon is ideal for tracking Grevy's zebra on the open plains and watching gerenuk browse at impossibly elegant heights, standing upright on their hind legs to reach acacia foliage. Return to camp at dusk as the air cools and the Ewaso Ng'iro glows copper in the last light.

Buffalo Springs — Wider Plains and Cheetah Country

Cross the Ewaso Ng'iro bridge and spend the morning exploring Buffalo Springs National Reserve, which mirrors Samburu in wildlife richness but opens into broader flood plains that give cheetah, lion, and large herds of beisa oryx more space to roam. The southern sections near the springs themselves attract prolific birdlife including martial eagle, secretary bird, and multiple species of hornbill. A midday break at camp during the hottest hours gives way to a long afternoon drive that often yields the best predator activity of the safari — kudu emerge from the luggas at dusk and lions gather to drink.

Shaba National Reserve — Lava Fields and Leopard Forest

Drive east along the Ewaso Ng'iro to Shaba National Reserve, the least visited and most dramatically scenic of the three reserves. Black lava outcrops and seasonal luggas break up the terrain into intimate pockets of habitat where leopard, lesser kudu, and Somali ostrich are encountered with surprising frequency. The doum-palm riverine forest that fringes the river here is famously beautiful — this is the landscape that inspired Joy Adamson's work rehabilitating Penny the leopard — and afternoon light through the palms is exceptional for photography. Sundowners on a lava kopje overlooking the river conclude a remarkable day.

Morning Drive and Return to Nairobi

Rise before dawn for a final game drive in Shaba, catching the cool golden hour when nocturnal predators are still active and elephant move toward the river in long purposeful lines. After a late breakfast, depart for the drive back to Nairobi arriving by early evening in time for onward connections, dinner in the city, or your international departure. The long road south carries the best of northern Kenya's landscapes one final time — a fitting close to five days in one of East Africa's most rewarding wildlife frontiers.
