Overview

Rwanda is the most time-efficient place on Earth to tick off two of Africa's greatest primate encounters. Volcanoes National Park, rising on the flanks of the Virunga massif in the country's northwest, puts you among mountain gorillas in barely two hours from Kigali's international airport. These are not elusive, distant sightings — trackers lead you to a habituated family group and, for a precious full hour, you sit just metres from silverbacks, mothers cradling infants, and juveniles wrestling in the undergrowth. The volcanic forest smells of wild celery and morning mist; the silence is broken only by deep chest-beats and the rustle of bamboo.

A six-hour drive south along Rwanda's rolling tea-country ridge takes you deep into Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests. Here, guided chimp tracking plunges you into cathedral canopy where at least 13 primate species co-exist — common chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus, L'Hoest's monkeys and Angola colobus among them. The Nyungwe canopy walkway, suspended 70 metres above the forest floor, offers a birder's-eye view of this extraordinary landscape, home to over 300 bird species including the rare Grauer's rush warbler.

Arrive Kigali — Genocide Memorial & City Orientation

Your driver-guide meets you at Kigali International Airport and transfers you into the city, passing through immaculately clean boulevards lined with flowering trees. After checking into your hotel and freshening up, you make a guided visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial — a sombre, essential, and ultimately hopeful experience that illuminates Rwanda's history and its extraordinary journey of reconciliation. The afternoon is free for a walk through the Kimironko market or a coffee at one of Kigali's acclaimed specialty cafés, before a full-board dinner and an early night ahead of your gorilla trek.

Volcanoes National Park — Mountain Gorilla Trek

After an early breakfast you drive two hours northwest through terraced hillsides and crater-lake panoramas to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi, arriving in time for the 7 am ranger briefing. Assigned to a family group, you set off with armed rangers and expert trackers into the dense bamboo and Hagenia forest; trek times range from one to five hours depending on where the family has roamed overnight. When you find them — silverback reclining, infants tumbling over each other, mothers peeling wild celery — your full hour of permitted observation passes in what feels like minutes. Return to your lodge for a celebratory lunch and an afternoon at leisure to absorb what you have just witnessed.

Volcanoes to Kigali — Scenic Transfer & Overnight

This morning is yours to enjoy the lodge's sweeping views over the chain of Virunga volcanoes and the twin crater lakes below before a leisurely checkout. Your driver-guide takes you back southeast to Kigali on the well-maintained tarmac highway, stopping at a roadside craft cooperative where local artisans sell traditional Imigongo geometric paintings — a wonderful, ethical memento of Rwanda. Arrive in Kigali mid-afternoon with time for shopping in the CBD or simply relaxing at your hotel before dinner, as tomorrow's journey south to Nyungwe begins at dawn.

Nyungwe Forest — Chimpanzee Tracking & Canopy Walkway

An early start sets you on the 5–6 hour scenic drive south along Rwanda's spine, the forested ridgeline road winding past tea estates that stretch down hillsides in perfect geometric rows. You arrive at Nyungwe Forest National Park by mid-morning, in time to join an afternoon chimpanzee tracking excursion into one of Africa's last remaining ancient montane rainforests. Your guide leads you through tangled root systems and soaring fig trees, listening for the distant hoots and screams that betray a chimpanzee group on the move; sightings often include L'Hoest's monkeys and colobus troops as a bonus. If time and energy allow, a walk on the canopy walkway — suspended 70 metres above the forest floor — at golden-hour light rewards with extraordinary birding and a genuine sense of the forest's scale.

Nyungwe Morning Walk & Return to Kigali

Rise early for an optional dawn nature walk with a park naturalist along one of Nyungwe's shorter trails — the forest is alive at first light with the cascading calls of hundreds of bird species, and Angola colobus monkeys are often seen in the treetops above the lodge. After a relaxed breakfast and checkout, your driver-guide takes you back north to Kigali on the 5–6 hour return journey, arriving at the capital with enough time for a final meal or coffee before your onward international flight. Airport drop-off marks the end of an unforgettable double-primate Rwanda circuit.
