Rwanda Honeymoon Signature — 6 Days

Private gorillas + luxury Lake Kivu + canopy walk — Rwanda's romantic circuit.

Overview

Rwanda's most romantic itinerary weaves together two of Africa's most extraordinary wilderness encounters — a private gorilla trek in the mist-draped Virunga volcanoes and a chimpanzee habituation experience deep inside Nyungwe's ancient montane forest — with the kind of intimate luxury that makes a honeymoon truly unforgettable. You will wake at Bisate Lodge, one of the world's most celebrated eco-lodges, to a panorama of six volcanoes rising above layers of cloud, sip morning coffee on a private veranda, and then set off on foot through Hagenia woodland and dense bamboo thickets in pursuit of one of the mountain gorilla families habituated to human presence in Volcanoes National Park. Standing within metres of a silverback — his dark eyes calm, his family grooming and tumbling around him — is a moment that couples carry for life.

From the Virungas your journey arcs westward along Rwanda's dramatic Spine of the Continent ridge road to Lake Kivu, the vast inland sea that forms Rwanda's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. At Rubavu (Gisenyi) the evenings belong entirely to you: a sunset cruise on the glassy lake, fresh tilapia grilled on the shore, and the silhouette of the Nyiragongo volcano glowing faintly across the water. The pace here is deliberately unhurried — this is a honeymoon, not a race.

Heading south along the lake shore you descend into the tea-carpeted hills above Nyungwe Forest and your home for two nights at One&Only Nyungwe House, a property whose colonial-era planter's aesthetic and impeccable spa make it one of East Africa's finest. Nyungwe National Park is one of Africa's oldest intact montane rainforests and the canopy walkway — suspended 70 metres above the forest floor — gives you a birds-eye perspective over a cathedral of green that shelters 13 primate species, more than 300 bird species, and flora found nowhere else on earth. Your private spa treatment, booked in-house, is the perfect counterpoint to the morning's adventure.

The journey closes with a return to Kigali, a city that has emerged from the shadows of history to become one of Africa's cleanest, safest, and most design-forward capitals. A reflective visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial provides powerful context for the country's extraordinary transformation, and the vibrant Kimironko market and contemporary art galleries of the city centre offer a fitting final flourish before your onward flight.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

Arrival in Kigali — Welcome to the Land of a Thousand Hills

Your driver-guide meets you at Kigali International Airport and transfers you to your Kigali hotel for a private welcome lunch and rest after your flight. In the afternoon you make a reflective visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial — an essential and deeply moving introduction to Rwanda's history and the extraordinary national resilience that has shaped the country you are about to explore. Evening briefing with your guide over a candlelit dinner in Kigali, where you discuss tomorrow's early start for the Virungas.

Kigali to Volcanoes National Park — Into the Virunga Highlands

An early breakfast and a two-and-a-half-hour scenic drive northwest on the Kigali–Musanze highway brings you to Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi, where you check in and transfer to Bisate Lodge perched high on an eroded volcanic cone. The lodge's six ensuite forest villas are designed to blend into the afromontane landscape, with sweeping views across the Virunga chain — Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, and beyond. Your afternoon is free to stroll the lodge's reforestation gardens, visit a nearby community project, or simply absorb the altitude and the cathedral silence of the forest from your private veranda.

Mountain Gorilla Trek — Face to Face in the Virungas

This is the heart of the honeymoon — your private gorilla trek. After a 7:00 am briefing at the Rwanda Development Board trekking office, you and your guide and a small group of no more than eight visitors set off on foot through cultivated fields and then into dense Hagenia-Hypericum woodland and bamboo forest. Tracking time varies from under an hour to four hours depending on the gorilla family's movements, and when you find them your one-hour visit with the family is one of the most intimate wildlife encounters on earth — infants playing in the undergrowth, a silverback resting in a shaft of filtered light, the air carrying the faint musk of warm fur. Return to Bisate for a celebratory lunch, afternoon spa treatments in-villa, and a romantic private dinner under lantern light.

Volcanoes to Lake Kivu — The Spine of the Continent

After a leisurely breakfast you depart westward through Musanze and then southwest along Rwanda's dramatic ridge road, the Congo-Nile Trail corridor dropping away to both sides into valleys of terraced banana and sorghum. You arrive at Rubavu (Gisenyi) on the northern shore of Lake Kivu by midday and check into your lakeside property, where the Congo's Nyiragongo volcano fills the western horizon. After lunch and a rest, your sunset cruise aboard a private boat takes you out across the glassy water as the sky turns amber and violet — return to shore for a fresh lake-fish dinner.

Lake Kivu to Nyungwe Forest — Ancient Rainforest & the Canopy Walkway

A scenic three-to-four-hour drive south along the Lake Kivu shoreline passes through the tea and coffee estates of the Southern Province before climbing into the montane mist forest above Nyungwe. You arrive at One&Only Nyungwe House in time for lunch and a first walk through the property's estate gardens. This afternoon is your canopy walkway experience: a guided walk through the forest to a series of suspension bridges strung 70 metres above the ancient Nyungwe canopy, where L'Hoest's monkeys and a dazzling array of Albertine Rift endemic birds share the treetops with you. This evening, return to the lodge for your private couples' spa massage followed by a romantic candlelit dinner arranged by the lodge team.

Chimp Trek in Nyungwe & Return to Kigali

An early morning start for your chimpanzee trek in Nyungwe Forest National Park, where habituated chimpanzee communities roam through one of Africa's oldest continuous rainforests. Your guide leads you through dense undergrowth to the sound of distant pant-hoots and crashing branches; encountering a group of chimpanzees at close range — their intelligence unmistakable, their social dynamics endlessly captivating — is a perfect complement to the gorilla experience earlier in the week. After a final brunch at Nyungwe House you make the approximately three-hour drive back to Kigali, arriving in good time for an onward flight or an optional overnight in the capital.
