Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park — a chain of dormant and semi-active volcanoes draped in Afromontane forest along the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo — is home to some of the last remaining mountain gorillas on the planet, and this focused three-day journey puts you right at the heart of that experience.

The tour opens in Kigali, one of Africa's most orderly and surprisingly green capital cities. A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial offers a sobering but essential grounding in Rwanda's modern history — a story of devastating loss and, remarkably, of national reconstruction and reconciliation that has made Rwanda a model for sustainable tourism and conservation across the continent. From Kigali you drive northwest through terraced hills and red-earth valleys toward Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri), the gateway town that sits at the foot of the Virunga massif.

Trekking day begins before dawn. Rangers and trackers brief your small permitted group, then lead you upslope through bamboo thickets, wild celery glades and moss-draped forest until, sometimes after one hour and sometimes after four, the trackers signal a halt. What follows — an allocated hour in close proximity to an entire gorilla family, watching silverbacks drum their chests, juveniles tumble through the undergrowth and mothers nurse infants — is consistently described by returning clients as a life-defining hour. The Volcanoes sector also harbours golden monkeys, forest buffalo, and over 200 bird species including the handsome Rwenzori turaco.

Kigali Arrival & Genocide Memorial — Transfer to Musanze

Your driver-guide meets you at Kigali International Airport and, after settling into a brief city orientation, escorts you to the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi — a profoundly moving site that honours the 250,000 victims buried on its grounds and contextualises Rwanda's extraordinary journey of reconciliation. In the early afternoon you depart the capital on the scenic two-hour drive northwest, climbing through terraced hillsides of sorghum and tea to the highland town of Musanze, which sits at roughly 1,850 m in the shadow of the Virunga volcanoes. Check in to your lodge, receive a briefing on tomorrow's trek, and enjoy a leisurely dinner as the volcanoes loom against the night sky.

Mountain Gorilla Trek — Volcanoes National Park

Rise early for a pre-dawn breakfast before transferring to Volcanoes National Park headquarters at Kinigi for the 07:00 ranger briefing and gorilla family assignment. Armed with a walking stick and accompanied by experienced trackers, your small group (max 8 people per permit) ascends through bamboo zones and dense Hagenia-Hypericum forest, following fresh trail signs until the trackers locate your assigned gorilla family. You spend a full permitted hour at close range — a truly humbling encounter — before descending to the trailhead. Back at the lodge in the early afternoon, the rest of the day is free to rest, explore the lodge gardens, or optionally join a golden monkey trek in the bamboo belt (at extra cost).

Morning at Leisure — Return Drive to Kigali

Enjoy a final breakfast on the lodge terrace with views across the volcanoes before check-out. The morning is leisurely — take a gentle walk in the lodge grounds, browse local craft stalls in Musanze, or simply absorb the highland air before the two-hour scenic drive back to Kigali. Your driver-guide drops you at your Kigali hotel or directly at the international airport, timing the transfer to suit your onward flight departure.
