Nyerere National Park — still widely known as the Selous Game Reserve — is Africa's largest protected wildlife area, sprawling across more than 50,000 square kilometres of southern Tanzania. Four times the size of the Serengeti yet receiving only a fraction of its visitors, this vast wilderness of riverine forest, miombo woodland, papyrus lagoons, and open floodplains remains one of the continent's last truly wild frontiers. The Rufiji River, Tanzania's mightiest waterway, threads through the heart of the reserve, feeding a labyrinth of oxbow lakes, palm-fringed channels, and sandbar beaches that give Nyerere a character found nowhere else in East Africa.

The painted wolf population here is one of the most viable in Africa, and sightings, while never guaranteed in the wild, are consistently exceptional compared to any other Tanzanian park.

After a morning transfer to Dar es Salaam's Wilson-area domestic terminal, you board a scheduled light aircraft for the 45-minute flight south over the Tanzanian coastal hinterland, descending onto a red-earth bush airstrip deep inside Nyerere National Park. Your guide meets you at the strip for a short drive to camp, where a welcome lunch and cold drinks await under shade beside the Rufiji. The afternoon launches directly into action with a two-hour boat cruise on the river — your first encounter with the massive Nile crocodiles hauled out on sandbars, hippo pods surfacing and snorting around your vessel, and flocks of African skimmers, goliath herons, and malachite kingfishers working the shallows in the low golden light.

Walking Safari at Dawn — Game Drive — Evening River Cruise

Rise before first light for a guided walking safari departing camp at first colour — the coolest, quietest hour, when elephant herds move through fever-tree groves and the spoor of the previous night is still fresh in the sandy soil. Your armed Tanzania Wildlife Authority ranger leads the group at a measured pace, reading tracks, identifying bird calls, and approaching plains game on foot at distances impossible from a vehicle. After a hearty bush breakfast back at camp, the mid-morning brings a 4x4 game drive into the reserve's open grassland and miombo woodland systems, searching for lion pride resting in shade, buffalo herds raising dust in the distance, and the pack territories of Nyerere's celebrated African wild dogs. A sundowner cruise in the late afternoon completes the day as the Rufiji turns amber and the hippos begin their nightly grazing foray onto the banks.

Today's programme ventures deeper into the reserve's spectacular lake district — a chain of oxbow lakes separated from the main Rufiji channel over centuries, now teeming with hippo, croc, waterbuck, and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds including yellow-billed stork, African fish eagle, and the prehistoric-looking open-billed stork. An extended morning game drive targets the wild dog packs whose home ranges overlap the eastern grassland sectors, often observed at dens during the denning season or on a cooperative hunt in the early hours. The afternoon walking activity revisits different woodland terrain, giving your ranger the opportunity to point out termite architecture, medicinal plant knowledge, and the subtle art of field tracking before a final evening on the water as the reserve falls silent around you.

Final Morning Game Drive — Fly Out to Dar es Salaam

A last early-morning game drive or short lakeside walk captures the reserve in its most vivid light before a leisurely camp breakfast and the ritual of packing a bag heavy with memories. Your guide transfers you to the bush airstrip in time for the late-morning light-aircraft departure, lifting you above the vast miombo canopy and the silver ribbon of the Rufiji before delivering you back to Dar es Salaam's domestic terminal by midday — leaving the afternoon free for onward connections or a final afternoon on the Swahili coast.
