Serengeti Under Canvas & Balloon Honeymoon — 6 Days

Migration tented camp, dawn balloon and champagne breakfast on the plains.

Overview

Few honeymoons on earth can match waking before sunrise to the sound of lions calling across the Serengeti plains, knowing that in an hour you will be drifting silently above them in a hot-air balloon as the African sun crests the horizon. This six-day journey is designed exclusively for couples who want intimacy alongside true wilderness — not a resort pool, but canvas walls that whisper with the night breeze, a private guide who reads the land like a book, and sunsets watched from a private deck over an endless golden sea of grass.

Your adventure begins with a light-aircraft flight from Arusha into the Central Serengeti or the Mara River corridor, depending on where the wildebeest migration has concentrated. Touching down on a bush airstrip and stepping directly into a 4x4 with your dedicated guide sets the tone immediately — this is not a package tour, it is a private safari choreographed around your pace. Luxury mobile camps such as Singita Sabora, Asilia's Ubuntu Migration Camp, or similar boutique tented properties are positioned to follow the herds, placing you in the exact heart of the action each night.

The undisputed highlight is the pre-dawn balloon flight that lifts you and your partner above the Serengeti at first light. Drifting over kopjes, acacia woodlands and river bends while spotting elephant, giraffe, buffalo and lion from above is an experience that redefines the word 'romantic'. On landing, a white-gloved champagne breakfast is laid out on the plains — a moment so cinematic it stays with couples for the rest of their lives.

From the Serengeti you transfer to the Ngorongoro Crater highlands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most extraordinary landscapes. The crater floor — a self-contained 260-square-kilometre ecosystem — harbours the highest density of large mammals in Africa, including resident black rhino, enormous lion prides, and vast herds of wildebeest and zebra that never leave. A night at a crater-rim lodge, perched above the caldera mist, provides the perfect romantic finale before the short drive back to Arusha.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Arusha Arrival & Pre-Safari Briefing

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your AECONS representative meets you for the transfer to your overnight hotel in Arusha — the gateway city to Tanzania's northern circuit, sitting in the shadow of Mount Meru. The afternoon is yours to settle in, freshen up, and absorb the first sights and sounds of East Africa: the red-dust roads, the vendors selling Maasai beadwork, the startling clarity of the highland air. In the evening your private guide joins you for a relaxed dinner and safari briefing, walking you through your itinerary, introducing you to the terrain you will cross, and building anticipation for the flight into the Serengeti the following morning.

Fly into the Serengeti — Afternoon Game Drive

After an early breakfast you transfer to Arusha Airport for your light-aircraft flight to the Serengeti — roughly 45 minutes of breathtaking views as the highland farmlands give way to the Ngorongoro highlands and then the endless ochre-and-green expanse of the plains below. Your guide and vehicle are waiting at the bush airstrip, and your first game drive begins almost the moment the propeller stops. The Central Serengeti's iconic kopje-studded grasslands and the Seronera River valley are among the richest year-round big-cat habitats on earth; expect leopard lounging in sausage trees and lion prides resting in the midday heat. You reach camp in time for a sundowner on the deck as the sky ignites in shades of amber and rose.

Hot-Air Balloon at Dawn — Champagne Breakfast on the Plains

A gentle wake-up call before 5 a.m. brings you to one of the most romantic experiences in Africa: climbing into the balloon basket in the cool darkness and rising silently as the Serengeti comes alive below. For roughly an hour your pilot drifts you over riverine forest, open grassland, and the winding threads of seasonal luggas while you spot herds from above — an entirely different and deeply intimate perspective on the ecosystem. On landing, the ground crew has arranged a full champagne breakfast on white linen directly on the plains, surrounded by the animals you just flew over. The afternoon is reserved for a relaxed guided game drive following fresh tracks — lions, cheetah, and the ever-present wildebeest columns that define the Serengeti.

Full-Day Serengeti — Migration & Big Cat Country

A full day in the Serengeti is a rare luxury — no airstrip deadlines, no long transfers, just the land and the wildlife and two people sharing a completely private vehicle. Your guide tailors the drive entirely to what the bush is offering: following radio calls from fellow guides about a cheetah hunt in progress, parking quietly beside a hippo pool as territorial males battle, or simply pausing the engine to listen to the chorus of red-billed queleas lifting from a waterhole in a murmuration of thousands. A packed bush lunch in the shade of an acacia gives you time to flip through your cameras and relive the morning, before an afternoon drive that pushes toward a favourite sundowner kopje as dusk settles across the plains.

    Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater Rim

A morning game drive en route to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area ensures you make the most of every hour on the Serengeti before the road begins to climb. The drive west toward the crater highlands takes you through Maasai pasturelands and acacia-studded hills, with the great caldera revealing itself spectacularly as you crest the rim road at roughly 2,300 metres. Check in to your crater-rim lodge — properties like the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge or Lemala Ngorongoro perch on the crater's edge with uninterrupted views across the misty 19-kilometre-wide caldera. Sundowners on the private veranda, a four-course candlelit dinner, and the distant roar of lions echoing up from the crater floor make this a honeymoon evening to remember.

Ngorongoro Crater Descent — Departure to Arusha

Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater floor for a morning game drive through one of Africa's most concentrated wildlife habitats: a 260-square-kilometre natural amphitheatre that shelters an estimated 25,000 large animals, including rare black rhino, enormous lion prides with densities found nowhere else, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra that are permanent residents, and huge flocks of flamingos gilding the shallow soda lake. After a picnic lunch beside the hippo pool at Lake Magadi, ascend the crater wall and make your way to Arusha — arriving in the late afternoon for your onward international flight, or overnight as required.
