Southern Ethiopia rewards the curious traveller with a layered journey through ancient landscapes, living cultures and wildlife spectacles that feel entirely unscripted. This six-day circuit threads the Rift Valley lakes chain southward from Addis Ababa, pausing at reed-fringed Lake Ziway where Zay fishermen pole dugout tankwas between island monasteries, then dropping to the sun-warmed shores of Lake Langano — one of the few Rift lakes safe for swimming — before reaching the pink-tinged waters of the Abijatta-Shalla system where tens of thousands of lesser flamingos wheel against a backdrop of hot springs and volcanic escarpments.
The route deepens as it heads south toward Arba Minch, the 'Forty Springs' town perched between Lakes Abaya and Chamo. A dawn boat trip onto Lake Chamo is the tour's most dramatic wildlife encounter: Nile crocodiles in genuinely startling numbers haul out on sandbanks known locally as the Crocodile Market, sharing the shallows with hippos, fish eagles and African darters. Nechisar National Park's grassland plains behind the lake shelter Burchell's zebra, Grant's gazelle and the rare Swayne's hartebeest, while the Forty Springs themselves bubble up through lush forest that forms a green bridge between the two lakes.
Above Arba Minch the landscape rises steeply to the cool highlands of Chencha, home of the Dorze people. At elevations around 2,900 metres the Dorze weave some of Ethiopia's finest cotton cloth on hand looms in their remarkable 12-metre bamboo beehive houses — structures that can be dismantled and relocated overnight, and that regenerate from the base even as termites gradually eat upward from below. A visit to a Dorze compound includes a kocho bread-making demonstration, freshly brewed tella beer and the warmth of a community that has welcomed visitors on their own terms for decades.
The journey concludes in the Konso highlands, a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape where forty-plus generations of Konso farmers have sculpted the dry hillsides into interlocking stone-walled terraces that are among the most remarkable agricultural feats in Africa. Konso towns are governed through a poqalla elder system, defended by concentric dry-stone walls and punctuated by moraa plazas bearing carved waka grave markers — totemic wooden figures that honour fallen warriors and the cattle that defined their status. Together, the flamingos, the crocodiles, the bamboo towers and the stone terraces form a southern Ethiopian journey of genuine depth.

Depart Addis Ababa early to beat city traffic and head south on the main Rift Valley highway, stopping at Lake Ziway where local Zay fishermen still use traditional tankwa reed boats to reach the mid-lake island monasteries. Continue to Abijatta-Shalla National Park for an afternoon walk among the steaming hot springs on Shalla's crater shores, scanning for the vast flocks of lesser flamingos that feed in the alkaline shallows. Settle in for the night at a comfortable lodge on the bilharzia-free shores of Lake Langano, with a sundowner over the rust-red water as Rift Valley birds call from the acacia fringe.
A leisurely morning walk along Langano's shoreline before driving south to Hawassa, capital of the Southern Nations region and home to one of Ethiopia's most atmospheric fish markets. Arrive at the waterfront landing in mid-morning when the marabou storks, yellow-billed kites and fish eagles compete noisily with local fishermen unloading the night's catch of tilapia and catfish from Lake Hawassa. Spend the afternoon exploring the lakeshore promenade and the surrounding acacia woodland, which harbours vervet monkeys, colobus and a good selection of waterbirds, before a relaxed dinner at your lakeside lodge.
Drive south through the increasingly dramatic Rift Valley scenery, passing the market town of Sodo and climbing briefly through highland farms before descending to Arba Minch, where the two vast lakes of Abaya and Chamo glitter on either side of the peninsula. Check in and take the afternoon to orient yourself with a walk through Nechisar National Park's Forty Springs forest, where crystal-clear freshwater springs emerge from volcanic rock beneath a dense canopy of fig and wild coffee, accompanied by troops of Anubis baboons and the occasional bushbuck. Dinner and briefing from your guide on tomorrow's dawn boat departure.
Rise before dawn for a boat trip onto Lake Chamo, reaching the famous Crocodile Market sandbanks at first light when Nile crocodiles — some exceeding five metres — bask in extraordinary concentrations alongside wallowing hippos, while fish eagles, African darters and goliath herons work the shallows all around the boat. Return to shore for breakfast, then drive up the escarpment to Chencha and the Dorze highland village at 2,900 metres, where your guide introduces you to a Dorze family in their towering bamboo beehive home. Watch the hand-loom weaving of the prized Dorze cotton cloth, taste freshly prepared kocho flatbread made from false-banana leaf pulp, and sip tella barley beer with the household before returning to Arba Minch for dinner.
Drive south-west to Konso, a compact highland region recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Cultural Landscape for its extraordinary interlocking dry-stone terraces that have been maintained and expanded by the Konso people for over 400 years. A guided walk through the walled town of Karat-Konso and a nearby traditional village reveals the concentric defensive walls, central moraa plazas and generations-old waka carved wooden grave markers that commemorate warrior lineages and their cattle. In the late afternoon light the terraced hillsides glow amber and the dry-stone walls cast long shadows across the millet and sorghum fields, making this one of the most photogenic landscapes in all of Ethiopia.
After an early breakfast, transfer to Konso Kaliti airstrip or, if road returning, begin the long but scenic drive northward back through the Rift Valley toward Addis Ababa, arriving in the capital by late afternoon or evening in time for onward international connections. Your guide will ensure you reach the airport or hotel with ample time, and can arrange a final lunch stop at a Hawassa or Sodo restaurant en route.
