Northern circuit safari + 4 nights on Zanzibar's Nungwi white-sand beach.
Tanzania's northern circuit is one of Africa's great wildlife stages, and this ten-day journey pairs its finest parks with four sun-drenched nights on the white sands of Zanzibar — the classic East African honeymoon and luxury escape. You begin in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, rolling south from Arusha into Tarangire National Park, where ancient baobab forests and the Tarangire River draw the largest elephant concentrations in northern Tanzania and vast herds of zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo throughout the dry season.
From Tarangire you push westward into the Serengeti's boundless golden plains — Swahili for "endless plain" — where the spectacle of Africa unfolds at every turn. Depending on the season you may witness the Great Migration river crossings at the Mara River or track newly calved wildebeest on the short-grass plains of the south. The resident big-cat population is exceptional year-round, and game drives here routinely reward guests with lion prides, cheetah on the hunt, and leopard draped lazily in fever trees.
The journey then arcs south-east to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, descending into the world's largest intact volcanic caldera — a UNESCO World Heritage Site sheltering a permanently resident population of all the Big Five, including one of Tanzania's last viable black rhinoceros populations. The crater floor's varied habitats, from soda-lake flamingo flocks to dense Lerai Forest fig canopy, compress an extraordinary ecosystem into a single dramatic bowl roughly 20 km across.
Then comes the contrast that makes this circuit so compelling: a short flight delivers you from the dust of the savanna to the blue arc of the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar's Nungwi peninsula sits at the island's northern tip, sheltered by a coral-sand bay where the tides are gentle and the water an almost improbable shade of turquoise. Mornings here belong to the beach — snorkelling over coral gardens, paddling outrigger boats, watching fishermen haul dhows up the sand at dawn. Evenings call for sundowners aboard a traditional Zanzibari sailing dhow as the equatorial sky blazes orange over the ocean. A half-day in UNESCO-listed Stone Town reveals the island's layered Swahili, Arab, Indian and Portuguese heritage through its labyrinthine coral-stone streets, carved brass-studded doors, and spice-scented air. This is East Africa at its most complete: wild and serene, ancient and utterly alive.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport, where your AECONS driver-guide meets you with a placard and transfers you to your Arusha lodge. The afternoon is free to settle in, take a short walk around town, and soak in your first views of the Arusha skyline against the distant silhouette of Mount Meru. Over a welcome dinner at the lodge, your guide briefs you on the days ahead — park etiquette, what to pack in the day-bag, and what wildlife encounters await.
After an early breakfast you depart south through the Maasai steppe, arriving at Tarangire National Park's main gate in time for a full morning game drive. The Tarangire River acts as a magnet during the dry season, drawing enormous elephant families — sometimes 200 or more — to its muddy banks, and the ancient baobab-dotted savanna gives the park an otherworldly quality unlike anywhere else on the circuit. Afternoon drives focus on the riverine woodland fringing Silale Swamp, often rewarding guests with tree-climbing pythons, greater kudu, and large prides of lion. Return to camp as the sun drops behind the baobabs for your first firelit bush dinner.
A full dawn-to-dusk day in Tarangire allows you to explore the park's more remote southern sectors, where visitor numbers drop and wildlife encounters feel genuinely wild. Early morning light is perfect for photography as herds of elephant move through the golden grass and superb starlings flash iridescent colours in the acacias. Look out for the park's healthy cheetah population on the open Kuro floodplain, and keep binoculars ready for more than 550 recorded bird species — from lilac-breasted rollers to the massive kori bustard. A packed bush lunch is enjoyed in the shade of a giant baobab tree before afternoon drives back toward the northern circuit.
Depart Tarangire after breakfast and drive north-west through the Ngorongoro highlands and Olduvai Gorge corridor toward the Serengeti's eastern boundary, entering through the Naabi Hill Gate. The drive itself is part of the adventure — the landscape transforms from acacia scrub to the open short-grass plains that inspired the Maasai name 'Siringet.' An en-route game drive on the way to camp lets you settle into the rhythm of the Serengeti before your first sundowner under its immense, star-packed sky.
Rise before dawn for an optional morning bush walk (where permitted) or early game drive through the Seronera Valley, arguably the best year-round leopard habitat in Africa — fig trees along the Seronera River regularly host relaxing cats with their kills stashed in the canopy overhead. Big cat activity peaks in the late morning as lions move to shaded kopjes (granite outcroppings) and cheetah begin their hunts on the open grassland. The afternoon drive swings toward the Moru Kopjes, where resident lion prides and black-maned males give photographers extraordinary close-range access from the safety of the vehicle.
A second full day in the Serengeti ensures you catch the landscape at different times of light and follow the migration herds as they move across the plains — from river crossings in the north (July–October) to calving spectacles on the southern plains (January–February). Midday hours at camp offer a welcome rest beside the pool before returning to the bush for a golden-hour game drive as the herds feed and predators begin their evening hunts. The Serengeti's night sky, utterly free of light pollution, provides a breathtaking finale as the Southern Cross rises over the acacia horizon.
Morning game drive en route east before climbing out of the Serengeti ecosystem onto the Ngorongoro highlands, a cool-misted Afromontane world of crater-rim forest and wide Maasai rangelands at around 2,400 metres above sea level. The transition from open savanna to montane forest is dramatic — colobus monkeys crash through the canopy overhead as your vehicle winds up the escarpment road. Arrive at your crater-rim lodge in the afternoon, where the veranda offers a staggering first look directly down into the caldera — a preview of tomorrow's descent.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater floor at first light, passing through dense Lerai fever-tree forest before the crater floor opens into a mosaic of short-grass plains, soda lake, and acacia woodland stretching 20 kilometres across. The crater's permanently resident wildlife — lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo, and critically endangered black rhino — are concentrated in an area that makes reliable Big Five sightings more achievable here than almost anywhere else in Africa. A packed lunch is enjoyed beside the hippo pool at Ngoitoktok Springs before afternoon drives focus on the flamingo-fringed Lake Magadi and the Lerai Forest's elephant families. Return to the rim by late afternoon for sundowners overlooking one of Africa's most profound landscapes.
An early breakfast and departure from the crater rim gets you to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport in time for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar's Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. The flight takes roughly 90 minutes and the moment you descend toward the island's turquoise fringing reef the mood of the trip transforms entirely — from dust and wildlife to coconut palms and ocean breezes. Your driver transfers you to your Nungwi beach resort at the island's northern tip, where your suite opens directly toward the Indian Ocean. The rest of the afternoon is yours: swim, nap in a hammock, or simply sit with a fresh coconut and let the bush give way to the beach.
Three full days at Nungwi offer the perfect antidote to days of early safari starts. The bay's calm, tidal waters are ideal for snorkelling over living coral gardens, swimming with sea turtles at the nearby rescue centre, or simply reading on the beach with the warm Indian Ocean at your feet. A half-day Stone Town excursion reveals Zanzibar's extraordinary layered history — Arab traders, Portuguese navigators, Omani sultans, and British colonisers have all left their mark on the UNESCO World Heritage streets, their carved wooden doors, spice markets, and the sobering story of the island's role in the East African slave trade. Each evening a sunset dhow cruise glides across the bay as the horizon ignites in coral and amber, returning you to the beach as dhow lanterns reflect on the dark water. Farewell dinner on the last night at a Swahili seafood restaurant on the seafront rounds off ten of East Africa's most varied and memorable days.
