One-day immersion in Kenya's arabica coffee belt — picking, roasting, tasting.
Kenya produces some of the world's most celebrated arabica coffee, and the fertile red-soil highlands around Thika — just 45 kilometres north-east of Nairobi — sit at the heart of that story. Elevations between 1,400 and 1,700 metres, reliable long rains, and volcanic loam give Kenyan AA beans their hallmark brightness: a winey, blackcurrant acidity balanced by a full, syrupy body that sets them apart on the global specialty market. This day tour takes you directly onto a 300-acre working estate where those qualities are earned through months of careful cultivation and labour-intensive processing.
Your morning begins at the coffee nursery and moves through the shaded rows of Ruiru 11 and SL28 varieties, where a farm agronomist explains how altitude, shade canopy, and controlled irrigation shape flavour. You pick ripe red cherries alongside the permanent farm crew, then follow the fruit through the wet-mill: pulping machines, fermentation tanks, grading channels, and the raised African drying beds where washed parchment coffee dries slowly in the highland sun. At the on-farm dry mill you watch the final hulling, sorting, and grading that separates AA, AB, and peaberry grades.
The highlight of the morning is the cupping session in the farm's tasting room. A trained Q-grader guides you through three single-estate roast profiles — light, medium, and dark — teaching you to evaluate aroma, break the crust, and slurp for flavour notes. You leave with a genuine vocabulary for the cup you enjoy every morning, and with a small bag of farm-roasted beans to take home.
After a farm lunch celebrating local Kikuyu cuisine — githeri, nyama choma, fresh ugali, and seasonal greens — the afternoon routes you ten kilometres east to the 14 Falls of Thika on the Athi River. The falls cascade over a series of broad basalt ledges surrounded by riparian forest alive with birds: African fish eagles, malachite kingfishers, and grey crowned cranes are regular sightings. Local boat operators ferry visitors to midstream viewpoints for close-up perspectives of the white water, while the surrounding greenery makes a cool and tranquil counterpoint to the morning's sensory intensity.
Route: Nairobi → Thika coffee farm → 14 Falls → Nairobi
Depart Nairobi at around 07:00, heading north-east on the Thika Superhighway as the city gives way to market towns, pineapple plots, and the rising green ridges of the Kiambu and Murang'a coffee belt. Arrive at the estate by 08:30 for a welcome cup of freshly brewed AA and an orientation walk through the nursery and shaded coffee rows with the farm agronomist, who explains how micro-climate and soil management create Thika's signature cup. Mid-morning moves into the wet mill where you pulp cherries, observe fermentation tanks, and watch parchment spread across African drying beds — then the cupping room session with three roast profiles brings all those flavours together in a hands-on tasting. After a hearty farm lunch of githeri, nyama choma, and fresh ugali, the afternoon drive takes you ten kilometres east to the thundering 14 Falls on the Athi River; explore the basalt ledges by foot and optional local boat, scanning the riparian trees for fish eagles and kingfishers, before a late-afternoon return to Nairobi arriving approximately 18:00.
