The only place on Earth for the Stresemann's bush-crow + the white-tailed swallow.
Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary sits in the remote semi-arid scrubland of southern Ethiopia, roughly 550 kilometres south of Addis Ababa near the Kenyan border, and it holds a distinction that no other place on Earth can claim: it is the only reliable site for two of the world's most sought-after endemic birds — Stresemann's bush-crow and the white-tailed swallow. The bush-crow, with its striking pale blue facial skin and inquisitive colonial behaviour, is confined to a range of barely 6,000 square kilometres, making every sighting an extraordinary privilege. The white-tailed swallow, roosting in acacia scrub above red laterite soil, is equally local. For serious birders, ticking both on a single morning walk is a life-list moment that ranks alongside seeing a mountain gorilla or a snow leopard.
Beyond these headline endemics, Yabelo's dry thornbush and open grassland habitats support a rich cast of over 194 recorded species. Expect Somali ostrich striding through the bush, secretary bird hunting the grassland edges, northern carmine bee-eater, Abyssinian roller, and a range of hornbills, larks, and cisticolas. Raptors are abundant — martial eagle, bateleur, and several smaller falcons regularly quarter the acacia canopy. The light in the southern Ethiopian plateau is exceptional for photography: bright, directional, and free of the humidity haze that softens images in wetter highland parks.
The journey south from Addis follows the Rift Valley lakes corridor, with an overnight in Hawassa — itself a superb birding destination. The shores of Lake Hawassa host marabou stork rookeries, African fish eagle, and concentrations of waders and waterfowl that make even the transfer day productive. Arriving in Yabelo, the landscape shifts from lush lakeshore to open Borana savanna, a transition that feels like crossing into a different continent.
This tour is also a window into Borana pastoralist culture, one of the Cushitic peoples of the Horn of Africa who have managed these arid rangelands for centuries alongside the wildlife. A guided cultural stop at a Borana settlement — with its characteristic circular homesteads, cattle-herding traditions, and intricate wood-and-hide wells — adds human depth to the birding itinerary. The pace throughout is relaxed: early morning and late afternoon birding sessions when the birds are active, midday rest during the heat, and comfortable full-board accommodation at Yabelo Motel.

An early departure from Addis Ababa heads south through the Ethiopian Rift Valley, one of Africa's great geological and ecological corridors. The drive to Hawassa passes a string of alkaline lakes — Ziway, Langano, and Abiata-Shalla — where flamingo, pelican, and African spoonbill decorate the shoreline in vast numbers. Arrive at Lake Hawassa in the afternoon for a waterfront birding walk, scanning for African fish eagle, saddle-billed stork, and the enormous marabou stork colonies that roost in the trees directly above the fish market. Rise before dawn for a final birding session on Lake Hawassa, then continue south through a dramatic landscape transition — from lush highlands past Dilla and into the dry Borana plateau country surrounding Yabelo. Arrive at Yabelo Wildlife Sanctuary by early afternoon and head straight into the field for the first encounter with Stresemann's bush-crow and white-tailed swallow; late afternoon light is excellent for photography of these highly localised endemics. A Borana cultural stop en route or at dusk introduces the region's pastoral heritage, with your guide explaining the relationship between the Borana people and this semi-arid ecosystem.
