Zanzibar is unlike anywhere else in East Africa — a coral-limestone island rising from the Indian Ocean where Persian traders, Portuguese explorers, Omani sultans, and Swahili fishermen have all left their mark across a thousand years of history. This five-day escape pairs two of the island's most compelling experiences: the labyrinthine alleyways and carved brass-studded doors of UNESCO-listed Stone Town, and the powder-white beaches and turquoise lagoons of Nungwi at the island's northern tip.
Your first full day is devoted to Stone Town, one of the few functioning ancient towns in East Africa and the most intact example of Swahili coastal trading culture on the continent. You will wind through narrow passages past the Old Fort, the ornate House of Wonders, the bustling Darajani Market, and the sobering site of the former slave market — now home to a cathedral and a moving underground memorial. The afternoon spice tour takes you into the rural heart of the island, where cloves, vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon and ylang-ylang grow in dense, fragrant gardens tended by farming families for generations.
From Day 3 onward, Nungwi becomes your world. Sitting at the northernmost point of Zanzibar, Nungwi enjoys a natural lagoon that retains water even at low tide — making it one of the few beaches on the island where you can swim at any hour. The reef just offshore is home to hawksbill turtles, and the Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond near the lighthouse gives you a chance to see juvenile green and hawksbill turtles being raised for release. Afternoons are yours to fill: snorkel the reef, take a sunset dhow cruise with the local fishermen, or simply do nothing beyond watching the sky turn amber over the ocean.
Nungwi's beach village retains an authentically Zanzibari atmosphere — traditional ngalawa outrigger canoes are built and launched right on the beach, and the evening fish barbecue stalls along the waterfront serve the day's catch grilled over coconut-husk coals. This tour is designed for ease and immersion in equal measure, moving at a pace that lets you absorb both the history and the sea air without rushing.

Your driver meets you on arrival at Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport and transfers you into the heart of Stone Town, where your boutique hotel occupies a restored merchant's townhouse steps from the seafront. The afternoon is free for an independent wander through the old quarter — lose yourself in the maze of coral-stone lanes, browse the spice stalls of Darajani Market, and watch the ocean-facing Forodhani Gardens come alive as hawkers set up their grills for the evening street-food market. Tonight, dine at the night market or your hotel rooftop terrace with a view across the dhow harbour.
After breakfast, your licensed guide leads you on a half-day walking tour of Stone Town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Swahili coastal towns in the world. Highlights include the Old Arab Fort, the Palace Museum (House of Wonders), the ornately carved Zanzibari wooden doors, and the deeply moving Anglican Cathedral and slave market memorial, where underground holding chambers bring the island's painful history into sharp focus. The afternoon spice tour takes you into the lush countryside east of town, where you walk through working farms and learn to identify — by sight, scent, and taste — cloves (Zanzibar's historic economic lifeline), cinnamon, nutmeg, lemongrass, and vanilla. Return to Stone Town in the early evening to pack for the next morning's transfer north.
After breakfast, your driver collects you for the roughly one-hour private transfer up the tarmac road to Nungwi at Zanzibar's northern tip. Check in to your beachfront resort, then head straight down to the sand — Nungwi's natural lagoon means the water is swimmable all day regardless of tide, something rare on Zanzibar's otherwise tidal east coast. The afternoon is spent snorkeling the coral reef just offshore, where parrotfish, surgeonfish, and the occasional hawksbill turtle pick their way through table corals and sea fans in water so clear you can see twenty metres to the sandy bottom. Watch traditional ngalawa outrigger canoes being carved and launched by local craftsmen on the northern beach before sunset.
A full, gloriously unstructured beach day — spend the morning swimming in the lagoon, kayaking, or visiting the Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond at the old lighthouse where juvenile green and hawksbill turtles are raised for open-ocean release. Lunch is at your leisure at one of the beachside restaurants serving grilled kingfish, octopus, and coconut rice in the shade of makuti thatch. As the sun begins its descent, board a traditional wooden dhow for a two-hour sunset cruise along Zanzibar's northern coast, watching the sky turn layered shades of gold and pink over the open Indian Ocean while the crew sails by the same dhow-rigged canvas that carried traders across these waters for centuries.
Enjoy a final breakfast overlooking the turquoise lagoon and take one last swim before checking out. Your driver collects you from Nungwi and transfers you back south to Zanzibar Airport in time for your onward flight. The drive takes approximately one hour, passing through clove and cassava farmland and the fringes of Stone Town, giving you a last glimpse of the island's layered geography before you depart.
