Kenya Safari in July

July is peak safari season in Kenya: the Great Migration is arriving in the Maasai Mara, skies are dry and clear, and wildlife gathers around shrinking water — though it's also the busiest, priciest month.

Weather

Dry and mild — warm days (~24–27°C), cool mornings and little rain.

Wildlife

The Great Migration reaches the Maasai Mara; the first river crossings begin late in the month.

Peak season · highest rates — book 6–12 months ahead

July marks the start of Kenya's high season, and for good reason. The long rains are well over, the plains have dried to gold, and animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes — making wildlife easy to find. In the Maasai Mara, the first of the migration's wildebeest begin pouring in from the Serengeti.

Beyond the Mara, July is excellent across Amboseli, Samburu and the Rift Valley lakes, with clear views of Kilimanjaro on many mornings. It's also a superb month to combine a safari with Kenya's coast, where the weather is dry and breezy.

Because July is peak season, the best camps and migration-front lodges sell out early — we recommend booking six months to a year ahead.

Kenya in July

Is July a good time for a Kenya safari? +

Yes — July is one of the best months. The weather is dry and comfortable, wildlife viewing is excellent, and the Great Migration begins arriving in the Maasai Mara. The trade-off is higher prices and busier camps.

Can you see the Great Migration in Kenya in July? +

Yes. The herds typically start crossing from the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara from around July, with the dramatic Mara River crossings building through late July into August and September.

What should I pack for Kenya in July? +

Layers: warm clothing for chilly early-morning game drives and lighter clothes for midday, plus neutral colours, a hat, sunscreen and a light jacket. Nights can be cold, especially at altitude.
