Kenya & Tanzania Classic Safari — 9 Days

Mara to Serengeti to Ngorongoro — the two-country circuit travellers ask for most.

Overview

Few itineraries in Africa carry the same weight of anticipation as the crossing from Kenya into Tanzania — two countries, one vast ecosystem, and an unbroken rhythm of wildlife that has played out across these savannahs for millennia. This nine-day circuit follows the most celebrated route in East Africa: from Nairobi you drive west into the Maasai Mara, spend days tracking lion prides and leopard among the rolling grass plains, then cross the Isebania border into Tanzania and enter the Serengeti through the western corridor before looping east to the incomparable Ngorongoro Crater.

The Maasai Mara anchors the Kenyan leg with good reason. Resident prides of lion, elephant families moving through acacia thickets, and the year-round presence of cheetah make every game drive rewarding regardless of season. If you travel between July and October you'll witness the Great Migration crossing — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra fording the Mara River in desperate, churning columns, one of nature's most visceral spectacles. Lake Nakuru, tucked into the floor of the Rift Valley, adds variety with its stands of fever-tree forest, white rhino on open lawns, and the flamingo-tinged shoreline that made this lake famous.

Crossing into Tanzania through Isebania is a seamless logistical handover — your Tanzanian driver-guide and a fresh 4x4 Land Cruiser meet you at the border, and the transition from Mara to Serengeti is barely perceptible on the ground; the same plains simply continue south. The Serengeti's sheer scale is humbling: 14,750 square kilometres of open savannah broken by granite kopjes where lion cubs tumble and klipspringer pick their way across the boulders. Central Serengeti guarantees resident big-cat sightings throughout the year, while the Mara River tributaries in the north draw the Migration herds in the second half of the year.

The journey ends at Ngorongoro, a collapsed volcanic caldera 600 metres deep and 19 kilometres wide that functions as a natural enclosure for one of Africa's densest concentrations of wildlife. Black rhino move across the crater floor, lion prides sleep in the open, hyena clans patrol the margins of the soda lake at dawn, and the birdlife — flamingo, kori bustard, martial eagle — is exceptional. Descending into the crater on a cool Highland morning, with the mist still clinging to the rim walls, is a moment travellers remember for the rest of their lives. From Ngorongoro you complete the circuit with a scenic drive to Arusha, Tanzania's safari capital, with Kilimanjaro occasionally visible on the horizon.

Route: Nairobi → Mara → (Isebania border) → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Nairobi Arrival & Briefing

Your driver-guide meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfers you to your Nairobi hotel, typically reaching the city by early evening. After settling in, you'll receive a full safari briefing covering route logistics, border procedures, and what to expect in the parks ahead. Use the evening to rest, check kit, and savour the anticipation of nine days in the wild.

  2. 2

    Nairobi to Lake Nakuru

After an early breakfast you head northwest from Nairobi on the A104 highway, dropping into the Great Rift Valley with sweeping views from the escarpment viewpoint before reaching Lake Nakuru National Park. An afternoon game drive takes in the alkaline lakeshore — often tinged pink with lesser flamingo — and the fever-tree forest where white rhino rest in the shade. Nakuru's compact size means you can cover most of the park's highlights in a single afternoon.

  3. 3

    Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara

Morning game drive in Lake Nakuru gives you a final chance to photograph the resident Rothschild giraffe and black-and-white colobus monkeys in the forest fringe before departing south through the Rift Valley floor. The drive to the Maasai Mara takes roughly five to six hours, with a lunch stop en route; you arrive in the reserve in time for a golden-hour afternoon game drive. The first sight of the endless Mara grasslands, with acacia silhouettes breaking the horizon, sets the tone for days ahead.

  4. 4

Full Day — Maasai Mara Game Drives

A full day in the Maasai Mara begins before sunrise with a flask of hot coffee and a morning drive timed to catch predators still active after the night hunt — cheetah scanning the open plains from termite mounds, lion prides stretched out on warm kopjes, and leopard descending from fig trees with first light. After a midday break at the lodge, an afternoon drive follows the Mara River corridor where elephant herds wade and hippo pods bask in the shallows. If the Migration is present, your guide will position you at a crossing point to witness wildebeest thundering into the river.

Maasai Mara to Serengeti (via Isebania Border)

After an early morning drive in the Mara, you complete border formalities at Isebania and are handed over to your Tanzanian driver-guide, who meets you with a waiting 4x4 on the Tanzania side. The drive into the Serengeti passes through Ikoma and enters the park via the Western Corridor, where the Grumeti River hosts massive crocodiles and the tree line hides topi and roan antelope. By late afternoon you are deep inside the Serengeti ecosystem, already scanning kopjes for lion and the horizon for moving herds.

🏨 Serengeti Sopa Lodge or Seronera Wildlife Lodge (or similar) 🍽 B, L, D
  6. 6

    Full Day — Central Serengeti

Central Serengeti — the Seronera area — is one of the most consistently productive wildlife zones on earth, fed year-round by the Seronera River and its riverine forest. Morning and afternoon drives cover open plains where cheetah make daylight kills, granite kopjes sheltering lion families, and the fever-tree thickets where leopard drape themselves over branches. Vast herds of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest graze in every direction, and smaller details — dung beetles rolling their load, secretary birds striding through dry grass, a martial eagle on a dead acacia — reward patient observers.

Serengeti to Ngorongoro — Rim Arrival

Departing the Serengeti through the Naabi Hill gate, you drive east across the short-grass plains of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, passing Maasai boma compounds and vast open rangeland shared between cattle and wildlife. The road climbs steadily as you approach the crater highlands, and by mid-afternoon you arrive at the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater — 2,300 metres above sea level and often wreathed in highland mist. Sundowner drinks on the rim as the crater floor glows gold below is an unforgettable introduction to one of Africa's great wonders.

  8. 8

    Full Day — Ngorongoro Crater

Descend into the crater at dawn when the light is soft and the floor is alive with activity: hyena clans returning from nightly patrols, black rhino grazing on the open grassland near Lerai Forest, and lion prides still draped over kopjes from the night. The crater's enclosed 260-square-kilometre floor concentrates wildlife at remarkable density — the Gorigor Swamp and the soda lake at the crater centre attract flamingo and wading birds, while the open grassland is a reliable stage for cheetah hunts. A packed lunch is taken in a designated picnic area beside the hippo pool before afternoon drives continue until the 6 pm gate closure.

Ngorongoro to Arusha — Safari Concludes

A final highland breakfast on the crater rim before a scenic three-hour drive east to Arusha along the tarmac highway that skirts the southern boundary of the Conservation Area. On a clear morning, Mount Kilimanjaro's snow-capped summit emerges above the clouds to the southeast — a fittingly grand farewell to the safari. Your Tanzanian driver-guide drops you at Arusha town, Kilimanjaro International Airport, or your onward connection as arranged.
