Overview

Lake Nakuru National Park sits at roughly 1,754 metres in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, just two hours west of Nairobi along the busy A104 highway. As the road descends from the Kikuyu Escarpment and the patchwork of maize farms gives way to open acacia woodland, the air softens and the dramatic western wall of the Rift comes into view — a foreshadowing of the spectacle that awaits inside the park gates.

The alkaline lake itself is the centrepiece of one of Kenya's most compact wildlife sanctuaries. Covering roughly 188 square kilometres of forest, woodland, rocky cliffs and open shore, Nakuru punches well above its weight. The lake is famous worldwide for the vast flocks of lesser and greater flamingos that congregate along the soda-rich shallows, turning stretches of shoreline a shimmering pink. Numbers fluctuate with water levels and algae blooms, but even in quieter seasons the birds are an extraordinary presence.

The park is a Kenya Wildlife Service rhino sanctuary, completely fenced and home to both southern white rhino and the critically endangered eastern black rhino. Morning game drives along the lakeshore tracks often produce close, unhurried sightings of white rhino grazing beside Cape buffalo and waterbuck. Rothschild's giraffe — one of Africa's rarest giraffe subspecies — were successfully reintroduced here and now move in small herds through the yellow-fever acacia groves. Lion, leopard, hyena and serval are resident, and the cliffs at Makalia Falls and Baboon Rocks offer commanding panoramas across the whole Rift Valley floor.

This one-day itinerary is carefully paced to make the most of the park's morning and midday hours, when light is beautiful and animals are active near the water. A picnic lunch is taken at a designated lakeside spot, letting you extend the game drive without losing time to a distant lodge. The route — Nairobi to the park gate and back — is straightforward, scenic and thoroughly achievable in a single day, making this the ideal introduction to Kenya's Rift Valley wildlife for first-time visitors or those with limited time.
