A 3,000 m crater lake + hot springs + horseback descent — a perfect day out of Addis.
Perched at 3,000 metres in the forested highlands of western Oromia, Wenchi Crater Lake is one of Ethiopia's most stunning and least-visited natural wonders — a near-perfect volcanic caldera filled with sapphire-blue water, framed by ancient juniper forest and terraced farmland. Unlike the dusty lowlands most visitors associate with Ethiopia, Wenchi feels cool, lush and otherworldly, the kind of landscape that stops conversation mid-sentence the moment you crest the crater rim.
Your day begins with a scenic three-hour drive west of Addis Ababa through the rolling Oromia countryside, passing the historic spa town of Ambo before the road climbs steeply into eucalyptus and juniper cloud forest. Once at the rim you mount sure-footed local horses — guided by Wenchi community horsemen — and descend a switchback trail through fragrant forest to the glittering lakeshore far below. The descent itself is half the experience: birdsong fills the air, colobus monkeys occasionally crash through the canopy overhead, and with each hairpin the panorama of the caldera opens wider.
At the lakeshore, a traditional hand-hewn wooden boat ferries you across calm green water to Cheretta Island, home to a contemplative Orthodox monastery founded in the 17th century. Monks in white robes tend gardens of vegetables and incense plants; ancient illuminated manuscripts and painted murals hide inside the stone-walled church. The island's quiet — broken only by the lap of water and the distant call of herons — is deeply restorative.
Back on the main shore, you soak aching muscles in the lakeside sulfur hot springs, naturally warmed by the same geothermal energy that carved this caldera millennia ago. A community-cooked lunch prepared by the Wenchi Eco-Tourism Association follows: fresh injera, spiced kitfo, shiro and seasonal vegetables, eaten outdoors with views across the crater. The ascent is made on horseback again, arriving at the rim in time for a final look before the drive back to Addis — a perfect full-day window into highland Ethiopia that most travellers completely miss.
Route: Addis → Ambo → Wenchi → Addis
Depart Addis Ababa early morning (around 06:30) for the three-hour westward drive through Oromia highlands, passing the spa town of Ambo before climbing into mist-shrouded juniper forest to reach the Wenchi crater rim. Mount your community horse and descend the switchback trail through birdsong and colobus monkey territory to the lakeshore, then board a hand-hewn wooden boat to Cheretta Island's 17th-century Orthodox monastery, where monks will show you ancient murals and incense gardens. Back on shore, soak in the geothermal hot springs before enjoying a community-cooked injera-and-kitfo lunch with views across the caldera; re-ascend the crater by horse and return to Addis Ababa in the early evening, arriving around 18:00–19:00.
