The Maasai Mara rewards travellers all year, but the experience shifts dramatically with the seasons. Your ideal month depends on whether you're chasing the drama of the Great Migration or the value and solitude of the green season.
From July to October the migration herds pour up from the Serengeti, and the Mara River crossings — usually most reliable in August and September — are the headline spectacle. Grass is short and gold, predators are highly visible, and skies are clear. This is peak season, so camps fill months ahead and rates are at their highest.
The green season (December to February) trades the migration for lush scenery, excellent birding and outstanding resident wildlife — lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant are here every month. The long rains of April and May bring the lowest prices and near-empty plains, at the cost of muddy tracks and some seasonal camp closures.
